Some typical OTT responses from folk here.
Cant you see this event for what it is??
Its a fun addition to supplement the calendar and hopefully attract new fans to the game whilst helping showcase the personalities within the game.
If you dont like it, dont watch it. simple.
Personally im looking forward to this "gimmick / novelty" event and will probably even attend it.
Seems youd be happy Stalin with the boring old calendar we had under Walker....
The more snooker the better as far as im concerned.

what is then?
by you and some others thinking then, thatll rule out the World Open and Welsh too then for ther shorter formats, the PTCs, the German and the 2 Chinese rankers.
Infact the UK and Worlds are only about half the length they used to be, so does that mean they aint proper snooker either now? where do you draw the line?

ball in hand, shot clock - these 2 things are not PURE snooker - and as such are gimmicks "they aint snooker"
UK and Worlds are the only PURE snooker events, with matches over sessions - as snooker should be.

yes it is a fun event and i welcome it why not for a few days in dreary january but lets get one thing straight it will not attract new fans all it will do is make new fans if any think this is the future of snooker and be disappointed that a game lasts 17 frames or more.
to attract fans we got to build on the game itself gimmicks just will never work for that.

Proper snooker events:
All PTC events
Shanghai Masters
World Open
UK
Masters
European Masters
Welsh Open
China Open
World Championships
Gimmick snooker events:
Premier League
Power Snooker
Skysports Shoot Out
Whilst I have no problem with snooker getting tv coverage in whatever format, I don't like too many variations. The Skysports Shoot Out is something Hearn hinted at when he first became chairman. What I personally would like to happen is to have one main format and Power Snooker as the alternative. I don't believe in shot clocks, I think the ball in hand after a foul rule to speed things up is not something that belongs in any serious snooker event (think about it and how it would work - any in off, potting a red from a pack splitter, being in a tight snooker could lose you the frame because it would guarantee the opponent be in A1 position next visit).
With Proper Snooker you have the variation right from the best of 5 of the World Open all the way through to the World Championships and ranking points. This is when snooker is a "sport". All the variations come under "entertainment".

Power Snooker has everything you need if you want faster snooker, it's better than the other variations in my opinion and it has identity which is totally seperate to snooker. All this experimenting with variants of true snooker does nothing but add confusion.

Remind me. Who is going to be involved in this? Is it a full-tour tournament, or just top-16? Or is it invitational?

Its the top 64 as at the last official cut off point. (After the World Open i think, though a couple of PTCs might have happened after that before the official cut off)
