Well, you're right that there's one step from the remove clue and two steps from the slate clue
I thought this one might be tricky

Barry (the town in Wales) > Welsh slate
Pinches > removes
Very good. I think you’re correct retrospectively

I’m going to put Steve Davis in the mix.
Davis was the last winner of the Mercantile Credit Classic, before it was ‘removed’ from the calendar.
There are a couple of links to ‘slate’. A slate is another word for a tab, or credit (Mercantile Credit).
And a roof tile (MercanTILE) is often called - and composed of - slate.
I know it’s wrong, but I’m just pulling at a few loose threads

Culling is a possible variety of removing.

I like the logic, but it isn't Steve Davis.
Like a number of the recent clues, we're just looking for a current player's family name.

Scott Donaldson?
One of Donald Trump’s sons is called Barron. If you bar someone, you remove them from an invitation. Not sure how the remaining ron/Ron relates to slate, but thought it was worth a go.

Andrew Pagett?
A clean slate could also be a new page, and you could remove something from somewhere else by getting it

Not Donaldson.
Sorry, seems this clue is a bit too hard.
Remove gives you a prefix.
Slate, along with its most common collocation, gives you another word. Put the prefix and the word you get from slate together for your answer.

I’ve got it!!!
Ron always slates venues. That must be it. Right…?
But no, I’m a bit stuck. I’ve done the usual routine of reading through the current ranking list. Struggling to find anything that really jumps out.

So the prefix could be ‘de’?
Peter Devlin?
Or ‘un’…
Theppy Un-Nooh?

Or maybe Yu Delu, although Delu isn’t the family name in this case, I believe

Ooh, we're getting very close with the slate clue
A gnat's hair from the solution I'd say.

By jove, he's done it
Un-new admittedly being something of an invented verb
