ATWSC Semi Final: Stephen Hendry v Ronnie O'Sullivan

Postby Pink Ball

Stephen Hendry v Ronnie O’Sullivan (Best of 35 frames)
Semi Finals, Match One
Date: December 13, 14, 15 and 16
Venue: The Crucible Theatre, Sheffield, United Kingdom

Vote for which of the two players you think was greater. Vote honestly, and leave your bias out of it. Don’t vote for a player just because you like them, don’t vote against a player just because you dislike them.

Consider the table conditions to be whatever conditions would have the least impact on the result.

You can use your own personal criteria for measuring greatness once it’s free of any bias towards/against (delete as applicable) players you like/dislike (delete as applicable).

Comment for whoever you wish to vote for.

The draw and format, including seeding, were done according to the FIFA World Cup. Eight players were seeded, they were drawn at random into different groups (except for Joe Davis who, as 15-times World Champion, was assigned Group A, to take part in the tournament's opening match, as the host nation does at the World Cup), but there was no seeding otherwise. Luck of the draw.

Wishful thinking. Hendry is the only player I consider to be a rival to O'Sullivan in terms of judging the greatest players ever, and a strong rival at that, but his record beyond the age of 27 kills his chances for me. It's just too glaring.

Ronnie!

Hendry is by far the greatest in handling the pressure and mental strength, only Davis comes close in this area. In every single other department Ronnie is superior. Hendry was more or less one dimensional, as an all around player I can think at least 4 better players than him.

bullocks. Higgins and Selby battle it out for first place in this department.

Agreed.

Agreed again.

Until he turned 27.

If you will, yes, but what he did between late 89 and late 96 was enough.

For a man who never had enough? Too convenient.

Hendry became soft when he got married and became a dad - exactly the same as what happened with Davis. The relentless manner in which they dominated during their twenties isn’t compatible with being a family man.

To be fair that’s a pretty big mark against both of them.
