All-time Fantasy World Snooker Championship

Postby Pink Ball

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to a special, one-off running of the All-Time Fantasy World Snooker Championship, where you, the posters, will decide the greatest snooker player of all-time in Snooker Island's opinion. It will begin next Thursday, November 19, will conclude on Sunday, December 20, and will be run-off largely following the format of the FIFA World Cup.

The fantasy tournament will be played across 12 of snooker's best-known and most historic venues.

The 12 venues (some of which no longer exist or are closed, but have been rebuilt or re-opened for this special tournament) are The Crucible, Camkin's Hall, Guild Hall, Alexandra Palace, Wembley Conference Centre, Thurston's Hall, The Hexagon, Goffs, The Tempodrom, Tower Circus, The Assembly Room and The Barbican Centre.

32 players have either been resurrected to the peak of their powers or restored to the peak of their powers for the duration of the tournament.

32 players will be divided into eight groups of four, with each group-stage match being best of 20 frames: one point for a 10-10 draw, three points for a win. The second round will feature 16 players made up of the top two finishers in each group, and will be played over the best of 25 frames, each match lasting one day. The quarter-finals will be best of 33 frames, with two matches at a time taking place over two days; the semi-finals will run concurrently at the Crucible over four days and will be best of 35 frames and the final will be best of 71 over four days at the Crucible.

You, the Snooker Island posters, will decide the winner of each match by poll. A score for each match will be determined according to how you vote, and I would ask posters to vote objectively. Bias should not come into this.

All previous World Champions have been invited, and the eight most successful players in World Championship history will be seeded: these are Joe Davis, Fred Davis, John Pulman, Stephen Hendry, Ray Reardon, Steve Davis, Ronnie O'Sullivan and John Higgins. Joe Davis, as the most successful, will be drawn into Group A and will play the opening match of the tournament at the Crucible.

The other 24 players are made up of former world champions, while the most successful non-world champions have also been invited: Ding Junhui, Paul Hunter, Doug Mountjoy, Matthew Stevens, Jimmy White and Eddie Charlton.

May the best man win.

The following procedures will be carried out for the purpose of the draw:

1) Two players from the 10-man pot two will be selected, at random, to move into six-man pot three. This will ensure that each pot has eight players.

2) No group can have any more than two English players. Seven groups will have two English players, one will have one English player.

3) One group will contain two Scottish/Welsh players. All the other groups will contain just one from either country.
