Interesting stuff. I had guessed Jackie and John were not related due to their nationalities, but had assumed Stuart was related to Ray!

Re: Rankings revisit - a trip through history

Postby chengdufan

In 1992-93 there were 4 'Minor ranking events' and I've been spending quite a bit of time considering whether to include them in these rankings or not.

In the end, I have decided not the include the Benson & Hedges Championship as it was the Masters qualifying event, and so the top-16 would not have been eligible to take part.
It was a more difficult decision not to include the 3 Strachan Challenge events as entry was available to all. I have decided not to include them though. Contributing to the decision are the following factors:
- Huge numbers of top players did not enter
- In the real rankings, they were only worth 1/10th of the main ranking events' points
- The events had the same format as other ranking events (Bo9->Bo11->Bo17)
- The points for the event would be helpful in ranking those in the 48-128 range, but would unhelpfully inflate some of those in the 32-47 range.

I reserve the right to include the 66 minor ranking events (PTCs etc.) that were played between 2010 and 2016.

1993 British Open - Assembly Rooms, Derby
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1993_British_Open

The semi-finalists in the British Open were made up of 4 of the top 6 players, White, Hendry, Davis and Wattana. Those four, along with Parrott and McManus have really been dominating things for the past year or so.
Steve Davis prevailed this time, with an easy 10-2 victory over Wattana in the final.

John Higgins made his breakthrough in this event, beating Terry Griffiths on his way to the quarter-final.

Up-and-comers Troy Shaw and Stephen Lee also did well, reaching the last 16. Shaw beat Danny Fowler and Joe Swail along the way, while Lee had victories over Steve James and Dene O'Kane

The 1993 Asian Open was once again held at The Imperial Queen's Park Hotel in Bangkok.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1993_Asian_Open

It was sponsored by Nescafe!

If you don't know who made it to the final, you will never guess. I imagine you'd put together 1000s of possible pairings before coming up with Dave Harold v Darren Morgan, both of whom made their first ranking event finals.
Harold won the title. He lost the first frame, but then went 7-1 ahead before sealing a 9-3 victory.

As for the top 4, Jimmy White went furthest, making the semi-finals. Parrot lost in the quarters. Hendry lost in the last 16 (to Harold). And Davis only made it as far as the last 32.

It was a good event for the relatively unknown 24-year-old Paul Tanner, who had wins against Neal Foulds, Mark Johnston-Allen and Jason Ferguson on his way to the quarters.
And for 22-year-old Welsh potter Paul Davies, who made a semi-final in an Asian event for the second time, beating Gary Wilkinson, Stephen Lee and John Parrott along the way.

QFs:
Darren Morgan (13) 5-2 Willie Thorne (14)
Jimmy White (1) 5-1 James Wattana (6)
Paul Davies (46) 5-2 John Parrott (3)
Dave Harold (78) 5-2 Paul Tanner (100)

He did. That's correct.
He was also always on hand when an under-18 player was at the table.

There was a thread here a while back about which players would have been World No.1 if rolling rankings had always been in place. I had White to go top after the 92 UK Championship. He was the most consistently strong player and should have won the World Championship that year.

The 1993 International Open was held at the Plymouth Pavilions
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1993_International_Open
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plymouth

It was back to business as usual, with the final being contested by Stephen Hendry and Steve Davis. Hendry hadn't had the best of seasons if we're honest, so winning this was a very welcome return to form just prior to the World Championship.

Dave Harold, fresh from winning the Asian Open, made it to the semi-finals. It is to be noted though that in his run he didn't play any of the top 32 players.

For some reason Jimmy White did not play, despite being scheduled to. And John Parrott was knocked out by Jason Ferguson in the last 32.

QFs:
Steve Davis (4) 5-3 Nigel Bond (15)
Ken Doherty (7) 5-2 Tony Jones (38)
Dave Harold (32) 5-4 Paul Davies (34)

I was looking at the list of new pros and it did rather go from feast to famine in terms of players with longevity. Would you say the standout names were Gerard Greene and Robin Hull?

I note that there were a couple of Italians and an Icelander on tour that season as well as a Belgian invasion spearheaded by Haneveer.

1993 World Championship - The Crucible Theatre, Sheffield
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1993_Worl ... ampionship

Going into the Chmpionship, Jimmy White and Stephen Hendry were the favourites. There was a clear 'top 6' though at the time, including Steve Davis, John Parrott, Alan McManus and James Wattana. It wouldn't have been a surprise if any of those players won it.

The two favourites made it to the final in what must have been anticipated as being a classic. Hendry ran away with it however, winning with a session to spare.

With the qualifying rounds being played in the previous summer, there were quite a few surprise match-ups for the seeds in the first round. Spencer Dunn and John Giles in particular were two who had done little of note other than qualify for this. It was perhaps not a surprise that only one seed lost in the first round (Robidoux).

OK, so I did something a bit stupid. For the ranking points following the 1993 World Championship, I accidentally used the wrong points multiple for two events. The 1991 Dubai Classic and Grand Prix points were multiplied by 3 instead of 1.

This meant that the players who had reached the final stages of either or both of those events were awarded too many points.
I've now corrected the data, and understandably, there have been a few changes. I have edited the posts above to accurately record the information, but just to note the biggest change here:
Following the 93 World Championship, Jimmy White remains number 1.

And Ronnie fans will be pleased to see that he moves up a couple of places, to 23rd...

I think I've been overdoing this. I made a couple of errors the last couple of days. I fortunately have mechanisms in place to catch errors, but I think the signs are there that I need to slow down a bit!

Oh yes indeed, the bigger the project, the more likely that the little errors will creep in here and there, and, the bigger the project, the exponentially greater impact each little error has.

While making my vid I've made errors every step of the way, every single stage in the process and at every return to the project after a break.

No matter how carefully I proceed and no matter how determined I am not to make errors, come the next phase of the process I pick up on an error I made in the previous stage.

And the really annoying thing is: it doesn't really matter in the slightest. The chance of someone else spotting the error and then actually caring about the error are infinitesimally small, the only person who will really care is... ourselves. We'll know it's wrong, and it'll drive us insane, every time we look at the project, we'll get annoyed. <laugh>
