For anyone interested, the pronunciation of Yan is closer to the Japanese currency, yen, than our favourite referee's given name, Jan (Verhaas).

I've noticed that some of the referees (not all) have been making a really good effort at pronouncing the Chinese players' names correctly in the last couple of years. Credit to them for that.

Except in the CL a few weeks ago where referees were completely inconsistent in the order of the names. Marcel Eckardt actually asked Zhao Jianbo about it before his first match, Zhao didn't understand the question (his first trip to the UK), but his opponent Zhou Yuelong cleared it up. The other referees called him 'Jianbo Zhao'.

There are enough videos on Youtube with Chinese referees which referees and commentators can watch to learn how to improve. Rob Walker (a professional broadcaster) is particularly awful: "Lie-you Hay-o-she-an".

The Lyu is hard to describe. First off, ignore the 'y'. An English speaking layman can pronounce Lyu and Lu (Lu Ning) the same (think English name Lou), which is fine really, although they sound quite different in Chinese.

For those who want to make more of an effort, you need to understand there are two very different 'u' sounds in Chinese, and they are both different from any English sound. The 'yu' in Lyu Haotian is a softer sound, while Lu Ning's 'u' is deeper. For Lyu's yu, think of a camp speaker seeing something disgusting and saying 'ooh'. For Lu's u, think of a caveman communicating in his deep voice 'ou'.

Haotian is two syllables, Hao and Tian. Hao is easy, it sounds close enough to 'How' in English.
Tian is Yan with a 't' at the front. Think 'tyen'.

I won't bother talking about tones because the raw syllables are difficult enough to get right for a non-Chinese speaker.

So, Lou How Tyen
Or a bit closer, Looh How Tyen.

You can understand why a lot of Chinese people give themselves an English name to make it easier in English!

Well, he's the youngest player to reach the top-16 for 25 years. He hasn't done badly.

We might not be able to watch him. If his reasons for withdrawing are to be believed, he could be absent until the World Championship in 2021.
