Beating 4+ seeds on the way to winning the WC

Postby D4P

Ronnie beat 4 seeds on his way to winning the 2020 WC.

The last player to do that was...Ronnie, in 2013. Before that, the last player to do it was...Ronnie, in 2012.

Before that,

2005: Murphy
2003: Williams
2001: Ronnie
1998: Higgins
1997: Doherty
1995: Hendry
1993: Hendry
1987: Davis
1985: Taylor
1984: Davis
1983: Davis
1981: Davis

Ronnie and Davis both accomplished the feat in 4 of their 6 WC victories.

Great stat!

You could add Griffiths in 1979 as he beat a seed in each round en route to the title. That said there were eight seeds rather than sixteen.

Murphy is the only one to beat five seeds to win the World Championship.

I wonder what the fewest seeds defeated en route to a World title? I know in 2006 Ebdon didn't face a top 16 opponent en route to the Final against Dott (that said Murphy was seeded 1 albeit not in the top 16)

Dott was granite in 2010. He probably played better than he did in 2006. Certainly scored better.

Yeah.

Always felt like Dott was an honourary seed.
