White vs Stevens (World Championship)

Postby TheRocket

Two of the best players never to have won the World title meet in the World final. Both known for their natural ability but also for their twitchiness.

Its prime Jimmy White of the early 90's vs prime Matthew Stevens of the early 00's in a World final.

Nobody.

They'd get to 17-17, then the deciding frame would last for eternity.

imo it would be as close as it gets. White probably played his best final in 1992. Stevens certainly in 2000. And both matches had the same pattern. Fantastic snooker for the first 20 frames or so followed by a meltdown. Even though Whites meltdown was probably worse, losing 10 consecutive frames after being 14:8 up.

Stevens still won 3 frames after Williams made the comeback from 13:7 behind.

Can't really pick a winner.

Do people seriously think White is in the same league as Stevens when it comes to bottling?

White won ten ranking titles. He won every well-known tournament available to him at least once, except for the World Championship.

Stevens won a UK Championship and picked off a few invitationals.

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if this hypothetical world final had a comfortable margin of victory for Jimmy, possibly 18-9 to 18-11

Stevens was a great player, UK and Masters Champion, twice WC runner-up and reaching the latter stages numerous times too.

White did indeed win a lot more than Stevens, but I don't think it would be one-sided. Stevens was a terrific scorer in his prime, lots of big breaks.
