Current players shouldn’t be allowed on the board really, for that exact reason.

That's the one thing I do agree with you about.
No way should an active player be allowed on the WPSBA. You should be retired first, and if you come back as a player after retiring, it should mean you automatically step down from the WPSBA board. No exceptions.
It's shocking that Ebdon was allowed to do both.

Ronnie had ample opportunities to win the frames he needed in that match.
People gripe that Ebdon played slow, but nobody ever gripes about Ronnie's inability to deal with it.
Don't get me wrong, I find Ebdon's snail pace incredibly dull, and am not a fan of his. But if a player can't deal with his style, that's not Ebdon's problem. It's his opponent's.
I agree with you but that particular match was ridiculous, it was far beyond Ebdon’s usual style.
Ronnie should have been able to deal with it, though. As a pro I’m not sure what difference it makes if your opponent makes a century or a break of 12 in five minutes. It still takes you five minutes to get back to the table.
I do think it gave Ebdon a false impression of how effective slow play is, as well. He seemed to be slower in general after this match than before it, and I don’t think it helped his game. I know he won the UK and got to another world final, but he seemed to go deep in tournaments far less often.

You make it sound like he was the only one, but Rex Williams, John Virgo & (I think) Ray Reardon were all on the board at various times, while active players; in fact - I think that was the point that the players would have a representative on the board, to look out for their interests. Unlike now, where its effectively a one-man fiefdom.

Even as a pro if you suspect your opponent is deliberately playing slow it must be very difficult indeed to not get in your head, which is of course why he did it. Post Steve Peters he might have had a better mindset toolkit to handle it.

I disagree with any player who is currently playing being on the board.

How would you feel about Barry Hearn awarding himself a 2yr tour card?

I think I've made it clear that I wouldn't want him running World Snooker at the same time as he was playing.

Good job that Ebdon didn't have to win, say, four multi-session matches on his way to the final. No, he fluked a World Title because the one opponent he played took him lightly.
That's why you never saw Ebdon win any other tournaments, the flukester.
lol no one cares Ebdon fanboy, literally no one on social media cares, the moment WST declared on Twitter that Ebdon was retiring there was an influx of jokes aimed at him cuz of his slow play
no one cares he's a WC, no one lmao his slow and boring play diminishes all of his achievements and the public never lie if he was loved he would've received adoration but he didn't
actually it's a good thing we have villains in snooker like Ebdon and Selby, always 2 sides of the coin that people needed to root against

Yeah. That's the key thing. Ebdon is always slow, but that particular session was glacial.
When it's out of the ordinary, there's suspicion that it's done deliberately to disrupt your opponent. Average shot times weren't recorded properly back then (I think they just had a running total for the match), and it was worked out Ebdon had to have been above 40 seconds per shot for that session.
When Matthew Syed of the Times criticised him for slow play, Ebdon sued him (and lost).
The real difficulty of Ebdon being on the board was when it came to look at match fixing allegations in his match v Wenbo in the 2008 NI Trophy. Bets were spread across several firms - some which stood to lose 5-figure sums on a 5-0 scoreline. Alan Chamberlain reported Ebdon for strangely missed pots without knowing of the money bet on the match. Mark Johnston Allen was in the audience and was very surprised by the margin of some of Ebdon's misses. The match wasn't filmed.

Never! The head referee is effectively the boss, and any decisions you make have nothing to do with the WPBSA.
For instance, the head referee now is Jan Verhaas, I'm not sure who that was back then but certainly the referee should never in his life be afraid to take a decision, even if he knows might attract attention. The referee is there for a reason, not just to respot the balls lol...

Well that suggests that do care. You also also care, seemingly.

Is that true? I've never heard that
That's pathetic behaviour by Ebdon. Imagine being so thin skinned.
