The 1928 final was interesting in that Lawrence was a very old contender at 42. It was played on a challenge basis with the 6 entrants playing each other for the right to meet the reigning champion Joe Davis. Lawrence hailed from Birmingham and had once been a junior All-England champion.

In the final, he was surprised that the table to be played on was not the match table at the familiar Camkin's Hall club but one that Davis had transported by rail from the Burroughs and Watts club he played at in Leicester Square in London. This undoubtedly disrupted Lawrence's confidence and he under performed in a final in which he was hotly tipped.

I believe the highest break in the tournament was beneath 50

He ran the game like a capo. Limited challenges to those he knew he could beat and restricted good amateur players to exhibition matches.

Without doubt he kept the game going in it's fallow years, but he did not court sympathy in contenders.

Always makes me laugh when people say he was one of the game's greatest players. I was probably better in my day.

What about Charlton in 1975? Who had the table in his favour back in Australia but Reardon still beat him?

Check on Youtube "Reardon 1975 World Final", one of the best pieces of snooker history I've heard, coming from the great man himself.

Charlton didnt have his own table. The final was played in several venues around Australia, as I remember.

Funnily and strangely enough, but I certainly reckon Mark Selby could had came even a much, much better champion and player than what he turned to.

Evidences?

Well, look how completely different playing he had when he started to rise up the rankings. He was just incredible. Even solely the the different playing and that very slow and pedant aiming made that look highly impressive. He has now came up with some really great shots but I would had just somehow fancied even more from him. He was so impressive and all-mighty when he basically sent Stephen Hendry packing it in, and the way he started to get better of Shaun Murphy and Stephen Maguire. He battled well against Ronnie during the Masters, well he won those matches and they were some matches but something was lacking from those. But nothing lacking when he beat then all-song Stephen Hendry during many of those longer format matches with many centuries. Maguire started to self-destruck, Murphy was just somehow too just something but still those also were the days.

I would somehow await something like that from Ding Junhui now but it isn´t any likely.

Bingham also won it, and he was playing absolutely some great, great snooker. Thinking it now. Bingham can still certainly play, remember how he ousted Shaun Murphy during the 2019 Shoot-Out was a highly, highly impressive. Fair play to him, as he really can play. But that just that he can, it isn´t never sure if he really fancies it.

Las Gemelitas.

Does great seafood and nothing else. Ceviches and chicharroes (fried chunks of pork) are the specialty. A flashy and bright two-story polleria.

This hole-in-the-wall, a little out of the center. A gem.

(Spanish omelet made from stingray).

Sights & Activities

Sheffield is a great place to amble. Bonus brownie points for some of the cleanest bathrooms in England.

So I was once again about players who came closest to make some real difference.
