2019 United Kingdom Championship Prediction Contest

Postby PLtheRef

Welcome one and all to the 2019 UK Championship Prediction Contest

The United Kingdom Prediction Contest has a proud tradition in being the first Contest run on the old 606 which led onto successor forums before becoming Snooker Island in 2009.

This year, I've decided to try something rather different.

Rules
- Each entrant starts with 100 points.
- You 'bet' points on the outcome of a match - receiving points if your prediction wins and losing points if they don't.
- You receive extra points for a correct score - provided you predicted the winner.
- You must predict on at least one match per session, meaning you must predict on both Semi-Finals and the Final. Missing a session will result in a 10 point deduction.
- You can only bet a maximum of what points you have - if your score drops below zero then you may bet a maximum total of points to bring your score up to 10.
- Predict two players to reach the Final

E.g. of how to predict

John Higgins v Peter Lines - 6 Points - Higgins to win - 6-1

Scoring
x points dependent on what you have bet
3 points for a correct score - 5 points for the final
10 points if you predict the overall tournament winner, 5 points for the runner-up,

Tie-break rule
- Most Correct Scorelines
- Most Correct Winners.

Good Luck! - Templates to Follow

Humm something diferent than the standard... although I think you once tried this format with another tournament, either you or someone else because I remember predicting the points.

Will enter for sure.

Yes, the 2012 China Open had a 'betting format' - the reason that one didn't necessary work because you could stake your total balance on each match. - Which led to some inflated scores - in addition eliminating entrants who were 'bankrupted' wasn't popular. Cut formats had applied in other contests previously but members indicated they preferred contests where everyone could compete to the end.

Templates to go out later this evening.

Bet one match each session yeah I get it, but your maximum amount of bets is when you reach 100 points right?

For instance, I bet 20 points on one match each session, once I get to 100 I cant bet anymore correct?

you not getting the points until PL Posts the table However there is a potential flow in the system you could bet 100 points in the first day on a sure bet to win and with the first Round of the UK as it is you could easily be on 400 before the second round starts when predicting gets harder the further in you get all you need is to predict on 8 matches out of 64 in the first round

not my rules however i would have made it that you need to bet on 50% of matches per session meaning 32 out of 64 in the round.

Aye, since there are no odds the system incentives betting on the favourites in the early rounds. And avoiding close match-ups.

That said if you put 100 on Selby last year you would have had egg on your face.

So let me get this right...

I can bet a maximum of 100 points on the first day?

And then if my tally adds up the next days I can bet more right?

If this is the case, I think I'll bet in more matches on the first day. I can still do that correct?

To answer the above points.

The table will be updated each day - with the score (and a balance to account for matches predicted which haven't taken place yet)

The rationale behind predicting at least one match per session is to ensure that no-one can get into a big lead and then try and sit back on the said lead. - Wildey's suggestion regarding predicting at least half is something well worth considering if this format is used again.

It does incentivise betting on likely favourites, but the more you stake is the more you risk.

Yes, you can use up your stake on the first day and bet with what you have on subsequent days, as long as you bet on at least one match in that round.

You can bet on more matches, for Tuesday if you wish, as long as you have the means to do so - and aren't changing stakes or predictions for matches you have already made predictions for.

I have used 20 points on the first day, so I think I'll bet more, in this case I think I'll bet the remaining 80 points I have left. It's a risk if someone loses, but worth a try.
