80s Davis vs 90s Hendry

Postby sas6789

If these two had played each other in a world final both at their absolute peaks, who would prevail? Would Hendry's great long potting and break building be too much for Davis or could Davis tie him up with his superior safety and tactical game?

Nobody smashes peak in form Hendry, not even Ronnie.

Might not smash him, but peak Ronnie would win most of their matches.

It would be pretty much 50-50 IMO. Anyway this thread isn't about Ronnie it's about 80s Davis vs 90s Hendry in case you misread.

And in case you misread, it wasnt me who started talking about Ronnie and it wasnt me who first replied to that post.

By the time Hendry matured was Davis still at his peak?

I too young to have seen the 89 and 90 UK Finals but that seems about as close as you can get to both at their peak.

Yes, he says so himself. If Hendry hadn't come along he'd have won more

Jimmy White who lost four times to Davis at the Crucible during the 80's finally beat him for the first time there in 1990. But a lot of that was probably down to Hendry taking Davis aura, particularly in big events. Other players started believing they could beat Davis too.

Jimmy was unfortunate he caught Davis and Hendry at their peaks.

Still not an excuse to never win at least one world title, as he really bottled the 92 final from 14-8 up.

Davis started playing worse in the early 90s, he was less clinical than before and began losing to more players. Perhaps family life took over and he wasn't putting enough practice in (I think he married about 1990). Davis was probably nearer his 80s peak around 93-94 when he overtook Hendry at the top of the provisional rankings and won a bunch of tournaments in quick succession. If Davis won the 94 World semi against Hendry he'd have been guaranteed #1 again, so it was pretty close, and I think most agree Hendry was near his peak around 94.

Hendry imo. Clearly the better breakbuilder/scorer. And he showed in the UK finals 89 and 90 he could compete with Davis in the safety department. Even though Davis still had the edge in that department of course.

But if they played in a bo35 in the World final I think peak Hendry would have beaten peak Davis by a 4 or 5 frame cushion.

Of course he would that what he actually did theres proof there because that actually happened.

Just been watching highlights of the 1989 World Championship SF. Hendry unable to cope with the relentless tactical game of the nugget. If it were a prime Davis, instead of Jimmy, in those World finals, there is no way Hendry would have won 7 (great Potter and break builder that Hendry was).

Of course not.
