WORLD SNOOKER chiefs are set to introduce obligatory status to a number of events next season.

At least five world ranking events will become mandatory to enter according to the changes which was backed unanimously at the players AGM earlier in the season.

In a statement, a World Snooker spokeswoman revealed "At the start of the 2017-18 season, World Snooker abolished entry fees to its events for those members competing on the Main Tour

"World Snooker has an excellent working relationship with its broadcast partners across the world, with the BBC signing a new contract securing coverage across the channel until the end of the 2023-24 season.

"World Snooker also understands its responsibilities towards its host broadcasters to ensure that they are in a position to showcase the very best talent that our sport has to offer.

"That its why five ranking events; namely the World Championship, United Kingdom Championship, Shoot-out, International Championship and China Open will be afforded obligatory status for next season with it written into the Players' contracts that they shall enter these five events automatically as part of the conditions for membership of the tour.

"Any player electing not to enter these events will be treated in a similar way to as if they had withdrawn from an event after the given deadline, with penalties increasing for repeated withdrawals."

World Snooker also announced an increase in the Prize Fund for the Shoot-Out event from 2019 with £70,000 going to the winner, and a guaranteed £1,000 for all players reaching the last 64.
