2018 European Championships

Postby kolompar

The U18, U21 and Men's events will be held in Sofia, Bulgaria from 2 to 16 February. As far as I know, there will be tour places for the U21 and Men's champions.

Jackson Page is defending his U18 title but he will get good competition from Florian Nüßle, who should be among the favorites for all three events after reaching the semis at the World Amateur. Albania's Eklent Kaci is also back after becoming one of the top 9-ball pool players in the world last year.
Darryl Hill, Kacper Filipiak, Fraser Patrick, Darren Morgan and Andrew Pagett are some of the former pros playing in the men's event. while Alex Borg's son is in the juniors.

He has a chance, hasn't played in a tour qualifying event for 10 years but won 6 red and other amateur.

Good standard in the U18, 3 centuries on the first day.

I hope Antony McGill doesn't win the mens tournament. WHens the last time we had two players with the same name on the tour?

Must have been back in the open era. The two Mark Williamses probably?

Page successfully defends his title winning 5-3.
U21 underway.

Just posted a thread about this.

Sorry, didn't realise it had already been discussed.

If you call this a discussion <laugh>

Page had a surprise loss to Croatia's Jan Jelenic in the group stages but still got through safely making 2 centuries along the way. Brandon Sargeant also made 2 tons, both in his last group match. First knockout round already finished today. Standout match next round for me is Sargeant against Mateusz Baranowski, one of the best Brits against one of mainland Europe's best.

Also Hamim Hussain did a Ronnie http://www.ebsa.tv/shoeless-in-sofia/

Tiihonen losing quite early once again, getting a bit disheartened with his stagnating development internationally. He's made some big leaps in the national level in the last couple of years but I've been starting to wonder how much of a chance he really has of becoming a pro to start with. To his credit, he's very ambitious and hard-working so I'm sure he'll make the most out of what he has.

Hopefully many of these players will play in Q School, seems to be a lot of talent here while the Q School graduates have been poor the last few years.

Baranowski beats Sargeant in a decider, good chances for mainland Europe now, only 3 Brits and 2 Irish remaining in the last 16. Page plays Brian Ochoiski next, who's yet to lose a frame. Pool specialist Kaci is also out, did well in the group stage so didn't expect it.

Simon Lichtenberg leading in the final but apparently would not get a tour card because Germany is not part of the WSF. Awful for him

Surely he will get a tour card, it's not like he could do anything about the WSF thing.

All the Germans who should know seem to be sure of it, Rolf Kalb etc. Obviously it could change.

Are they playing with different rules in this event or have I missed something about snooker rules?

Niva vs. Dimitrov: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRJ87IMHEho
At the end of frame 3 Niva potted the last red, followed by yellow. Instead of respotting the yellow to (duh) the yellow spot, the referee respotted it where it was before Niva potted the ball. Surely it should have gone to the yellow spot, right? :chin:

Of course <doh> Now I feel such an idiot <laugh>
But in my defense, the D isn't visible so didn't realise it was the other way around to normal TV matches.

Watched some on Saturday, though the standard was low but looks like it picked up later, 24 players made a century which must be a record, last year only 8 did. Still a bit disappointing final lineup, feels like just another British journeyman on the tour.
Last year's runner-up Andres Petrov lost in the last 64 to TJ Dowling.

Quarter Finals
Jamie Clarke (Wales) 2 - 5 Fraser Patrick (Scotland)
Harvey Chandler (England) 5 - 1 Heikki Niva (Finland)
Brendan O’Donoghue (Republic of Ireland) 5 - 4 Darren Morgan (Wales)
Jordan Brown (Northern Ireland) 5 - 3 Adam Stefanow (Poland)

Semi Finals
Harvey Chandler (England) 6 - 2 Fraser Patrick (Scotland)
Jordan Brown (northern Ireland) 6 - 1 Brendan O'Donoghue (Rep of Ireland)

Final
Harvey Chandler 7 - 2 Jordan Brown

Harvey Chandler (England) won the mens championships. So does he get a tour card? Hes' 23 so a new English talent?

Darren Morgan got knocked out in the quarters

Should get the tour card, EASB is a member of the WSF. I think he's a bit too old to be called new talent, he's played in very few notable events though, 3 PTCs in 2012, Q School in 2016 and PHC last year.
