So that was the snooker year 2017

Postby PLtheRef

With the Snooker year of 2017 now complete, and the festive season upon us, it's time to think back to the twelve snooker months of 2017. Call it unofficial awards season as it were.

Some questions to ponder

Player of the Year?

Match of the Year?

Shot of the Year?

Tournament of the Year?

Surprise of the Year?

Expectations for the snooker year 2018

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and best wishes for 2018

Player of the Year? Ronnie. With his Masters win, ans late flurry at the end.

Match of the Year? Ronnie/Murphy UK final, or Williams vs Bingtao NI final.... (Though, I missed Robbo vs Cao in Scotland. Sounded close.)

Shot of the Year?

Tournament of the Year? The answer is always The Crucible. For long matches. I liked the look of the venue for Northern Ireland.

Surprise of the Year? Neil Robertson not appearing at The Masters.

Expectations for the snooker year 2018 Yan Bingtao to win a ranking event. Ronnie to defend The Masters. Selby to defend The Crucible. Robertson's top-16 Crucible place to go down to the wire.

Player of the Year? Selbo won the two biggest ranking events of 2017, so despite Sullivan's best efforts and Selbo's poor recent form, it's still been the year of the Selbo.

Match of the Year? Selbo v Ding world championship semi-final. One of the greatest matches of all-time.

Shot of the Year? buck knows

Tournament of the Year? World Championship

Surprise of the Year? McLeod beating Trump at the Crucible from0-4 down.

Expectations for the snooker year 2018 Joy, misery etc.

Player of the Year?

Ronnie O'Sullivan without a doubt. Won 4 tournaments, Masters, UK, EO and Shanghai, plus 2 other Finals.

Match of the Year?

Ding v Selby Worlds Semi

Shot of the Year?

I know there's been many, but I'll point out Ronnie's shot at the English Open Final, 9th frame, shot on the blue to dislodge the last red on the table. That was some shot and effectively ended any hopes Kyren might have had of starting a comeback.

And not a exactly one shot, but Ryan Day winning a frame v Marco Fu at the WGP needing 4 snookers was a great feat too.

Tournament of the Year?

World Championships

Surprise of the Year?

Cao Yupeng reaching the Final of the Scottish Open after only winning a couple of matches all season.

Expectations for the snooker year 2018

Ronnie to win the Masters and hopefully the World Championships.

Merry Christmas everyone! :-D :cracker: :xmas: :pres: :santa: :tree: :xmas1:

Player of the Year?
Despite Selbo's Crucible success, Ronnie's 4 tourneys (Masters, UK, EO, SM) give him the edge.

Match of the Year?
Robbo vs :cow: It didn't have the highest of standards, but the end was so dramatic. :cow: choked in the same way poor old Jimmy did in 92 and 94, when he should have won both tourneys.

Shot of the Year?
Two shots pop in mind:
1. Ronnie vs Kyren in frame 9 at the EO, when Ronn freed that last red from the blue
2. Smurf vs Ronn at the WC when Smurf was in a snooker behind the yellow and he played the red in the middle 2 cushions with check side (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1xcMC4Wk6Y)

Tournament of the Year?
NI Open for me because Willo finally managed to win another ranker.

Surprise of the Year?
Robbo not qualifying for the Masters.

Expectations for the snooker year 2018
Ronnie to win a 6th WC  :win:
