How many hours a day? Be honest! :)

If I get a game that I like then it could easily be 4-5 hours a day at least. An hour or 2 before work and then another long session after work.

Let me guess. Jimmy White's "Whirlwind" Snooker?

Addiction is addiction. If he's at a tournament spending more time playing/thinking about video games than concentrating on his matches, it's bound to have a detrimental effect.

Like any addicton it can be hard to overcome so fair play to him for going cold turkey.

This was in the Snooker Scene magazine months ago. It said his passion for video games increased, he wasn't enjoying his snooker and so he didn't put the hours in, hence his poor string of results.

Makes sense why his form dropped off big time.

Good to see hes addressed the issue.

Problem is he was playing all night until sunrise. Has a wife and a son.

He was completely addicted to it.

Read this article. He was obsessed and it was taking up too much of his life. Very unhealthy.

Good on him for coming out and addressing this. It could help others in a similar position. It isn't something he should be ashamed of.

Yeah, I completely understand some of the symptoms he describes. I too sometimes play through the night and it can ocassionally dominate my thinking. I guess the difference is I don't have a wife and kids to worry about.

The major problem for Robertson I see is his obsession with games like World of Warcraft and League of Legends, games which have no defined ending and require you to continually invest more and more of your time into them. Can't stand games like that, personally.

I agree and never played games like that as I found them pointless and a waste of time. I used to play fifa, but gave up gaming recently.

I would have thought playing games that often would possibly lead to hand, wrist and forearm and nerve issues. At the very least fatigue to the muscles and to the mind. Lack of sleep and not having peace of mind. Can't be helpful at all for snooker and he needs to make sure he never plays them again if he's an all or nothing type of personality

Hasn't it always been obvious that Neil spends a whole lot of time with this type of stuff, just by following his twitter account over the years? Never understood why people called him the hardest worker, when it is impossible to be the hardest worker when you have such a time consuming hobby and a child.

Nobody ever called him the hardest worker that is what Selby and Bingham are called

They were talking on Eurosport about how Steve Davis used to have Space Invaders where he practiced. Although that wouldn't be as addictive as these online games. It's not as glamorous as Kirk Stevens being wired on cocaine. Although at least it's not an addiction to porn.

I'm a healthy sceptic when it comes to "addiction" of all kinds. You can't get "addicted" to playing video games. Neil just had a bad habit, but "habit" doesn't sound particularly dramatic so people tend to start imagining outrageous conflicts with their own free will. Society lets them get away with this strange sleight of hand manoeuvre because it somehow gets mixed up with healthy confessional processes.

I used to play a lot when I was younger. I grew out of it by finding other, dare I say, more mature interests. I think it's more of a bad habit if it is 4-5 hours a day for a long period, say many months, on the same game. If it's different games then I don't think there's much to be concerned about, but I'm no expert.

It is vital that people just do what they fancy to do. Like it is vital that you should write just what you yourself think. Not writing something funny or strange what some nutter down at the Pub has perhaps told you. That´s the line the teachers are having. Don´t copy paste but write what you really think. I certainly support that.

So if Neil just fancies to play the video games, then he should play those games. If having a some kind of pressure to do something then it is a different ball game. having a social pressure to consume alcohol or things like that are an extremely serious and complicated issues. There are people who never lets you down or to be in serious troubles. Don´t create those serious troubles. When you don´t have to.

People are holding the balance. Don´t mess with it. That´s vital. Otherwise it is always going to back-fire.
