Which shady industry should snooker depend on next?

Postby Pink Ball

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, it seemed as if 80 per cent of snooker tournaments were sponsored by companies who sold smokeable cancer-causing sticks.

It had been predicted for some time that restrictions would be placed on advertising these smokeable cancer-causing sticks, but snooker persevered against this tide of negativity - before, with disastrous consequences for the sport, advertising smokeable cancer-causing sticks was banned.

For something like a decade, snooker was ravaged as it struggled to find new sponsors to replace the void left by companies that sell smokeable, cancer-causing sticks. But in 2010, a new industry began pouring money into the game: companies that allow young men to destroy their lives by wasting money trying and failing to correctly predict the outcome of sporting events. So now, 80 per cent of snooker tournaments are sponsored by companies that allow young men to destroy their lives by wasting money trying and failing to correctly predict the outcome of sporting events.

Now, it's being predicted that advertising restrictions will be placed on companies that allow young men to destroy their lives by wasting money trying and failing to correctly predict the outcome of sporting events. So, should these restrictions come to pass (and they will, eventually), which industry will snooker turn to next?

Discuss.

Not just snooker, but darts as well.

It just shows you, doesn't it. It's a house built on a foundation of sand. It may look sturdy and strong now, but it wouldn't take a lot to bring it all crashing down.

EDIT: Going further people talk about how darts is thriving at the moment and what a tremendous job Hearn is doing with it, but any sport that relies so heavily on a single industry for its income is nowhere near as strong as it may seem. Certainly it's not a recipe for long-term success.

Looking at Matchroom Sports sponsors it's mostly betting companies like Betway and PartyPoker.com. Singha Beer is about only non-betting sponsor outside of boxing. Boxing is their main business and they have deals with sportwear firms that aren't going to be going anywhere near Snooker.

Why is drinking not included?

They've already had smoking and gambling, why not drinking?

The Stella Artois UK Championship.....

The Tia Maria Masters.......

The Carlsberg Special Brew World Snooker Championship....

We used to have in the 80s :

The Dry Blackthorn (Cider) Cup

Jameson (Whiskey) International Open

Hofmeister World Doubles (became the Fosters World Doubles)

the Carlsberg Challenge

Woodpecker (Cider) Welsh Professional Championship

Probably a few others i can't remember off the top of my head...

In an ideal world, Snooker would be sponsored by big sponsors like in Tennis or Golf, for instance:

Rolex, Barclays, BMW, Mercedes, and it could even of course have drinking companies like Carslberg, etc.

It's way too much dependent on betting companies, just like the tobacco back in the day.
