Monday 14th ~ Sunday 20th of November at Titanic Exhibition Centre, Belfast

Alex Higgins was Born and died in Belfast after years entertaining crowds in between so its fitting that the Northern Ireland Open with The Alex Higgins Trophy is played in his home city.

Liang Wenbo is the only man with a sniff of the 1 Million if he somehow wins all 4 Home Nation Events and he opens up against Veteran Nigel Bond on Tuesday.

Other players in the field include Judd Trump, Ding Junhui, Shaun Murphy, John Higgins, Ronnie O'Sullivan, Ali Carter, Kyren Wilson. Anthony McGill , Mark Williams, Stephen Maguire plus Northern Ireland's Mark Allen, Joe Swail and Amateur former Crucible Quarter Finalist Patrick Wallace Plus Jimmy White who was a friend of Alex Higgins right to the End.

Potential Ronnie v Higgins in the quarter-finals! But, obviously they both need to win 4 matches each to set-that-up.

Interestingly, £Million chasing Liang Wenbo is the only player in the Top-32 in his section, so should be expected to reach the quarter-finals. But it often doesn't follow that script.

Top-32 ranked players in each section:

Alan McManus
Rob Milkins
Stephen Maguire

Liang Wenbo
-------------------------------
Ben Woollaston
Kyren Wilson
Mark Davis
Ronnie O'Sullivan

David Gilbert
John Higgins
Mark Williams
Matt Selt

-------------------------------------------
Graeme Dott
Luca Brecel
Michael White
Ricky Walden
Shaun Murphy

Barry Hawkins
Joe Perry
Michael Holt
-------------------------------
Mark Allen
Marco Fu
Ryan Day

Anthony McGill
Ding Junhui
Thepchaiya Un-Nooh

It's beyond disappointing now, but the sentiment seems to be shared between me and a few others that are going to be attending: we could care less who /isn't/ going and we're instead just being thankful now for those 'big names' that have still decided to give the event a go.

I half expected ROS to pull out as well, but given how much he respected Alex Higgins, it's really not surprising that he would remain in the event.

Good way of looking at it. Players can only beat what's put in front of them.
This is a ranking event and the winner won't have an asterisk next to their name notifying who didn't play - the record books will always record it as a ranker!

Dennis Taylor and Joe Johnson commentating together. The nightmare duo.

If Steve had won in 85 & 86 do you think either would still be involved in the game?

Dennis Taylor probably has no idea who won in 1986.

For real?

Thank you! Excited that Dennis will be part of the Eurosport team in Belfast next week.

Might be more punditry than commentary.

Probably not. But with Dennis Taylor there would be still a slightly higher chance I think. He's just been a more popular character if you like with his glasses, personality and so on and overall he was a better player (as a Masters champ) than Joe Johnson even though you've probably got to say that Joe Johnson might had a better peak game.

He beat Steve Davis 18:12 in the world final. Something no other player of the 80's could have done to be honest. Steve was just head and shoulders above the rest. So Joe probably deserved his place at Eurosport lol.

But yeah, without this famous final no one would even know his name.

Very likely this would be their last competitive meeting...

This is a disaster. Eurosport will have to give them the afternoon off punditry duty. :grrr:

First result of the tournament:

Barry Hawkins 4-0 Martin O'Donnell

Scott Donaldson is leading Rob Milkins 3-1.
I am 'hoping' that Donaldson loses that game so I can use the line "Scott's home early!" - from the M&Ms advert?
