Action underway. Championship much shortened, perhaps because of insufficient entries, although it seems a pretty decent number to me. I believe now finishes 30th April, when we'll know who has qualified for the Pro Tour for 2 years. Let's hope no Visa problems this time ...

Sad to report last minute withdrawal of whole Afghan team, don't know why. That and some other players withdrawing lead to a re-draw, but some good players in the field nonetheless.

Fourteen groups of 5, not sure how many through from each group to knock-outs (which start on 28th April).

Ahmed Saif now using this route to try to get back on the Pro Tour, and Zhào Xīntóng trying yet again to get on Tour, keeps coming close! And trying to win but (presumably) not take a Pro Tour place, Pankaj Advani.

1st lot of matches are complete, so I've incorporated the scores in listing the groups

Do you happen to have the original draw?

At 70 entries, thats the largest field in the last 5 years at least. Previous there was 69 (2014), 36 (2013), 52 (2012) and 41 (2011).

Also nice to see some new nations - Indonesia and Macao havent competed in the last 5 years (or more, my records only go back to 2011 :/)

No, although the Facebook page about the Championship being run by someone in Malaysia did mention two revisions rather than just one.

To add to any confusion (I'm easily confused!) the World Cue Sportz website has the groups as A - N whereas what I've seen from ACBS has A-P with I and O omitted (which seems to be the normal way of things), naturally enough I thought when I first looked that they'd missed a group!

Name corrections – I had Geddy Putra, should be Gebby Putra, I had Lee Haw Meng, should be Lee Hwa Meng

Group B was an incredibly tight 3 way battle – Afshin Abdolmohammadi of Iran beat Hamza Akbar of Pakistan 4-1, Qatar’s Ahmed Saif beat Abdolmohammadi 4-2 and then in the last match Akbar beat Saif 4 – 0 to qualify and knock Saif out on frame difference.

Even closer (!) in Group N, again the previously unbeaten player losing in the last match and missing out on frame difference – Singapore’s Tommy Ang beat Hong Kong’s Alan Lin 4-2, Yoni Rachmanto of Indonesia beat Ang 4-3 and in the final game Lin beat Rachmanto 4-2.

In Group D, despite being the only unbeaten at the half way stage Bernard Tey of Singapore missed out on the knock outs, with losses to Nook Kritsanut and Zhāng Yǒng.

So the semi finals line up consists of:

ZHANG YONG: Yet another young sensation from china. This is his first major semi final.
PANKAJ ADVANI: Perhaps one of the best amateur players out there today. This is his fifth Asian semi final as he looks to reach his third final and win his first title.
HAMZA AKBAR: Represents one of the top performing countries on amateur level over the past few years. His first Asian senior semi final though he does have a bronze each in the junior and 6 red competitions over the past one year.
MOHAMMAD REZA: Coming from one of the emerging countries on the asian amateur level and being the only representative left of the hosts. First semi final for him too.

Expecting a Pankaj vs Hamza final but there might be a surprise out there.

HAMZA AKBAR WINS 6-2

SO ITS PANKAJ ADVANI VS HAMZA AKBAR(INDIA VS PAKISTAN) FOR THE TITLE!

CONSIDERING THAT PANKAJ WONT TAKE THE PRO TOUR CARD IF HE WINS, IF VISA OR FINANCIAL ISSUES DONT OCCUR HAMZA AKBAR SHOULD BE ON THE PRO TOUR NEXT SEASON I GUESS?

Hoping Hamza Akbar takes it so there can be no argument about the place, don't think World Snooker guarantees a place for a runner-up, just considers a nomination ...

Thinks it's a real shame for Nook Kritsanut, could turn out he's the player that took Advani closest but I don't think anyone could nominate him on that basis.

I dont think visa will be the main issue here...Here in Pakistan money is the main issue as many of these cuests have no money at all and the govt or sponsors arent willing to lend them that much amunt so they miss out. Asif coudnt go for the same reason and i woudnt be surprised if Hamza missed out too! :( Even he himself said it today that he would gladly take the place provided he gets money from the sponsors. Sad
