The defending champion lost the second round match at the Crucible. Reardon 13-6 to Spencer in the 1977 quarters (16 entries until 1980)

1979, Reardon lost again in the quarterfinals

1980 Griffiths lost 13-10 to Davis
2001 Williams lost 13-12 to Swail
2004 Williams lost 13-11 to Perry
2008 Higgins lost 13-9 to Day
2009 O'Sullivan lost 13-11 to Allen
2010 Higgins lost 13-11 to Davis

& 1980 is different because.. The second round was Griffiths first match. Davis beat Patsy Fagan 10-6 in the first round. In 77 & 79 there were 16 entries. From 82 there were 32. In 80 and 81, 24 entries with the top 8 seeds advancing to round two.
