Snooker's finest moment.
2014 would be that year. Two maximum breaks came Selt's way in the early stages of the event, as he dropped just seven frames. In the final, he would face Ronnie O'Sullivan, himself a world champion in 2001 and 2004, but a man with an abysmal record against the master. A hungover Selt looked exhausted on the Sunday after a night of liberal shagging, and his first unforced error of the championship allowed O'Sullivan to take the opening frame of the match. Selt shook off his whiskey head, and duly responded with a cool 146 break, a clearance that made O'Sullivan look a beaten man already.
By the end of the day, a somewhat below par Selt had secured a 15-2 overnight lead, with just five centuries. He was merciless on the bank holiday Monday however, as he wrapped up an 18-2 win within 40 minutes, adding two more centuries, a 143 and a 141. He finished with a sublime exhibition 72 total clearance, taking all yellows with reds. Selt's oft-fractious relationship with his then girlfriend Kate Upton had overshadowed the build up to the tournament, but the two put their problems aside for the time being as they kissed passionately under a sea of ticker tape. Selt looked up to the commentary box, and winked at his idol Stephen Hendry. Hendry smiled warmly, applauded his apprentice, and gave him a hard earned thumbs up, as if to say 'take good care of my crown, Matt'. As snooker moments go, none was more perfect than this.
