How much of a snooker hipster are you?

Postby Pink Ball

Here are a few groups of snooker players. Which one appeals most to you?
A) Jimmy White, Ronnie O’Sullivan, Judd Trump, & Charles Manson.
B) Mark Selby, John Higgins, Graeme Dott, and an amateur player that you claim is the next big thing, but isn’t.
C) Ronnie O’Sullivan, Mark Selby, Stephen Hendry, Dave Harold, whoever. They’re all winners to me!

You’re settling in for a perfect night of watching snooker. Set the scene!
A) Your mates from the English Defence League are over.
B) Mark Selby’s on the telly, rolling tobacco’s at the ready, and a craft beer is my bevvie! Afterwards, I might go online and pretend I watched The Wire instead of the Ronnie O’Sullivan game.
C) Who cares who’s playing, there’s snooker on the telly!

What’s your opinion of Ronnie O’Sullivan?
A) What’s that Ronnie, you want me to jump off a cliff? Yeah, why not I suppose.
B) Yeah, he’s fine, but MARK SELBY!
C) Fantastic player, love watching him play, especially when he’s up against a great opponent.

Who was the best player of the 00’s?
A) Well I didn’t carve Ronnie’s name into my arm for nothing.
B) Well Ronnie O’Sullivan won the most World titles, major titles, ranking titles, and spent the most years as world number one. So as much as I’d love to say Mark Selby, it’s got to be John Higgins.
C) Ronnie O’Sullivan, although it was a great era.

Who’s going to win the 2015 World Championship?
A) Wayl, you gotta wite off dah Slowby goy, he’s cursed innit? Good widdence!
B) Mark Selby’s the best player in the world. You don’t believe in silly curses do you?
C) Very open. I don’t believe in the curse, but it’s always tough to defend the world title. Could be any one of Selby, Murphy, Ronnie, Trump and Robertson. I’d love to see Ding come good, he’s a cracking little player.

Results:
Mostly A: You’re as mainstream as it gets. You love the obvious choices, Ronnie, Trump, White, Drago, anyone who makes time go fast. You hate ethnic minorities too, but I suppose that’s irrelevant.

Mostly B: You’re a true snooker hipster. Mark Selby’s shot selection is snooker’s answer to fine dining, and there’s nothing you love more than subtly devaluing Ronnie O’Sullivan’s incredible achievements.

Mostly C: You appreciate all types of play, and have no intention of being snobby about snooker. You’re no hipster though, and you’ve worn that fence out!

Hipster definition one: a subculture of men and women that value independent thinking, counter-culture, progressive politics, an appreciation of art, creativity, intelligence, dressing silly and wit

Hipster definition two: a derogative term, aimed at a group of people who are better dressed and having more fun than you

Definition of Hipster: The modern equivelant of a goth, with slightly less offensive clothing, where they seek to non-conform but end up conforming to the political leanings (social justice warriors and socialist liberals) and general dress and ideas of fun of there own subculture, thus rendering the entire point of their own subculture useless. Normally accompanied by lots of pretentious flaunting and twattery.

Just think of the exact opposite of yourself and you won't be far wrong.<ok>

A skinny teetotaler, who is popular with the ladies?

Morning :) I can't sleep, I thought I'd dig this up as it was bugging me a bit.

Hmmm, well, goths still exist. I know this because I see a stream of them arriving at Russell Brand's flat (he lives opposite me, I can see right into his lounge and he's single at the moment and that is his preferred taste in girls.) In America the term emo has become popular to describe this group of people, and that's related to the expressive, confessional, emotionally overwrought style of music that they listen to.

Social justice warriors. This is actually a pretty shrewd comment, AC. There are a ton of people who don't like what they see happening in the world - I'm not sure if you know, maybe you missed a meeting, but the media is controlled by corporations, wars happen because of oil, austerity measures are in place when there is absolutely no need (we got plenty of resources on this planet, it's just that the current system we have - capitalism - doesn't work too well when it comes to sharing these resources out.) The SJWs want the status quo to change but are doing nothing about it other than posting on forums/twitter etc.

However there are a few of us who are actually trying to change sh*t, and we are making headway in some areas. I'm currently involved in a project to stop Chinese mining companies decimate the remaining rain forests in Ecuador, because some of my friends live there and their way of life is threatened. This time it's personal! The rain forests are the lungs of the world, and if we lose them (current schedule of mining will see them completely destroyed in under 20 years) then who knows what the damage will be to the planet. The project is called Protect Ecuador if you are interested in finding out more http://protectecuador.org/

'The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing' Martin Luther King.

'Normally accompanied by lots of pretentious flaunting and twattery.' LOLZ AC. It was going fairly well, and then you just stick an arbitrary insult at the end. What bothers me here is your prejudice towards people behaving/thinking differently to you. But obviously you are absolutely entitled to your opinion.

Hipsters don't really exist. It's a term made up by the media because they need to put things in boxes.

If you can't sleep because of internet posts then....

But they've managed to stop pretending they're oh-so-unique and original. I'm fully aware of what a goth/emo is and the links between certain aspects

You may not have heard the term social justice warrior or sjw in the context I was using it for. A social justice warrior is by definition someone who isn't trying to do anything about it other than what they call raising awareness (or posting on the internet.) I've no issue with socialists or social justice and equality campaigners I was moaning about social justice warriors.

Well of course I was going to stick an arbitrary insult in at the end as the entire grouping of people are irritants.

No-one is going to call themselves one, but anybody who isn't one can spot the mothertruckers a mie off.

Dan _ I enjoyed your post for several reasons.

I have been making a habit of watching late night movies in bed recently, and I watched one with Russel Brand in it but for days and days I could not remember his name, and it really bugged me cos I wanted to tell my Mrs about that film in Hawaii with Xxxxx in it "was actually not a bad film". But without having his name it was gonna be a difficult conversation.

I'm glad you are making a stand against the Ecuador mining situation. I have made similar stands for causes that I felt were worthy, notably in the DRC (Congo) and their human rights record.

The other thing is I keep hearing EMO mentioned and kept thinking WTF ???

Cheers <ok>

I'm intrigued by this. What sort of stand did you take? You did not clarify this in your post.

Was one of the actions you took involve writing a letter to your local MP? And if so what was the outcome/result of this action?

Yes I wrote to my MP (Dr Liam Fox) and I got a reply saying in effect they are closely monitoring the situation in DRC. It was after I had watched a Ross Kemp extreme world documentary. Some of the human rights stuff are appalling, like setting fire or beating up witch doctors. <ok>

Nothing worse than they'd get as asylum seekers in Ireland. Although the Irish public seem proud of that!

Sickening. A lot of it is stirred up by the media, no doubt.

For a country that has said 'never again will we let this happen' so many times, we have an uncanny ability to let it happen!
