Indian Open Last 128 Discussion

Thursday 12th ~ Friday 13th at the Metrodome in Barnsley

This will be the second edition of the Indian Open, after a successful tournament in 2013 which was won by Ding Junhui, notable for home player Aditya Mehta having reached the Final of the event. It was to be held in October this season, but had to be postponed to mid March.

Before the action moves to India though, the players will have to win one qualifying round held in Barnsley, where defending champion Ding will start his defense against veteran Barry Pinches.

India's other top player, Pankaj Advani, will not be taking part as he's no longer on the tour, having decided to continue his successful career in Billiards, whilst other top players like current UK Champion Ronnie O'Sullivan, World Champion Mark Selby, Neil Robertson, current Masters Champion Shaun Murphy, Stuart Bingham, Mark Allen and Stephen Maguire are amongst the most notable absences in the tournament. But there certainly won't be any shortage of quality, with the other tour players in there battling it out for the title.

Who shall reach the Last 64 and earn a place at the venue?

Pankaj Advani will still be in the tournament as he won the wild card tournament and could have a run depending on how much time he's been practising/how easily he gets used to match table conditions again.

Figuerido v Selt would be a better match than Higgins v Bobat to be fair? Has anyone even heard of Adam fricking Bobat before?

Haven't really heard of that Adam guy before. I don't think anyone else knows him.

BTW, does anyone know how the spots in the qualifying draw by amateurs fills up? How do they choose which amateur gets into the qualifying draw?

It's based on the Q School which is done at after the Worlds every season. Basically amateurs pay money and play other Q school entrants until there are four left and those four get a tour place. The people who haven't made it are invited to fill spaces in the draw depending on how many frames they managed to win in the Q School.

Barry Hawkins has pulled out of the tournament meaning Zack Richardson will be making the Trip to India having never played in a Main Ranking tournament before

Given the absentees, including Hawkins now pulling out, I'd say this is a good chance for John Higgins to get his name on the honours list for this season...

Has this already started while the CL is still going? <doh> Explains why Hawkins pulled out but lots of others are missing. 7 of the top 16 hasn't entered plus Xiao and Gould of the top 64. Gouldy is the only top 64 player who hasn't entered the China open though. The two Maltese are playing in the European team championship which clashes with the China open so I guess they didn't want to come to play just one best of 7.

Agree, Higgins can lose to virtually anyone these days, so the high list of top players not entering doesn't change that. I'll change my mind if Higgins reaches Quarter-Finals and beyond playing well, and the short format might actually be good for him, but until that happens, if it happens, he's just an outsider for me.

Very happy that Luca won it :D he cameback from 3-1 down as well, about timehe reached another venue.

He will play Ronnie on Saturday China qualifiers, and if there's one player I wouldn't mnd Ronnie losing to, Luca is definately the one. I think Ronnie will have to play marmite to lose, but you never know....
