So at least four places in the Grand Finals at stake here (there are 8 places for Asian Tour qualifiers, but Dīng Jùnhuī, Stuart Bingham, Oliver Lines and Michael Holt can't be knocked out of the top 8, even though none have entered this event).

I say at least four as I'm not sure how they'll handle the situation where a player in qualified from both Asian and European Tour. Stuart Bingham is one place outside qualification via the European Tour at the moment, and (for instance) Joe Perry might qualify from this and is one place above Bingham on the European Tour ranking. Robert Milkins has the last Asian Tour spot in the Grand Finals but isn't entered - he has no need to defend hois position given his strong European Tour ranking, and can be discounted from any reckoning as he will be overtaken.

Anyone know why Ryan Day hasn't entered ? He's a long way back on the European Tour rankings. He's 5th on the Asian Tour rankings but will be overtaken by the two finalists at least, and if the two losing semi-finalists are any two of Matthew Selt, Jimmy Robertson, Lĭ Háng , Scott Donaldson, Xiāo Guódòng, Tián Péngfēi , Ben Woollaston, Graeme Dott or Ross Muir, then Day will be down to 9th. (Indeed, Selt overtakes him by reaching the quarterfinals). Not sure what happens if Jimmy Robertson makes the quarters only or Yú Délù the semis - they'd then be tied with Day on points.

As well as the players already mentioned, Dechawat Poomjaeng, Thepchaiya Un-Nooh and Yán Bĭngtāo could put themselves in the mix with a semi final run as long as but need the players above them to not reach the quarter finals or in some cases the Last 16. Below that, a whole raft of players could benefit from reaching the semis and poor performances by most of the players ranked above them, and any player in the competition will make the Grand Finals by reaching the final.

With only 33 Tour pros playing the chance of a shock in the 1st round is remote.

Today the closest thing to a shock was Rouzi Maimaiti 4-1 Li Yan

Although Rouzi Maimalti is effectively a tour pro hes not played outside of china where as Li Yan has spent 3 season on the Main Tour and has recorded wins against Mark Williams, John Higgins and Judd Trump before he lost his tour spot in 2013.

"Winning in Sheffield"? What do you mean? Playing this instead of CL? Surely you aren't refering to the Crucible?

Anyway, if I were a player i'd rather play in this than the CL as it's a good chance to get into Grand Finals from this.

I mean they are World Champions reduced to this. It seems a long journey for one small event. I can understand it if they was another ranking event in China the week after.

The battle for the four Pro Tour spots available through the Asian Tour is hotting up. Ross Muir looks fairly safe barring a series of unusual results, but would like to win his second round match (probably against the current amateur World Champion Yán Bĭngtāo) to be more sure.

Two of the top players competing for these spots face each other in the second round - Cáo Xīnlóng and Lín Shuài. With most of their competition facing really tough matches in the second round, the winner of that may find they've done enough (not impossible that the loser could gain a Pro Tour spot as well).

For a number of players, getting a shot at the Pro Tour depends on beating a Pro player - pretty appropriate really. So Guăn Zhèn needs to beat Ben Woollaston, Méi Xīwén needs to beat Tom Ford, Luó Hónghào needs to beat Alfie Burden and Táng Jùn's probable opponent is Elliot Slessor. Four players who may well be in a similar situation if they get through the first round are Sean O'Sullivan, assuming he reaches the second round he'll be up against Scott Donaldson, Lóng Zéhuáng could be up against new pro Zhōu Yuèlóng, Xú Sī potentially faces Lĭ Háng and if Zhào Xīntóng gets past Paul Davison in the first round, Graeme Dott awaits in the second round. Not a good draw for Zhào Xīntóng, noting also in Asian Tour 1 he drew Dīng Jùnhuī in the first round, and his short run of success in Asian Tour 2 ended in round 3 with a 4-2 loss to Stuart Bingham.

In theory the two Thai players who may need a Pro Tour spot via this route - Thepchaiya Un-Nooh and Noppon Saengkham - have easier draws, but although Saengkham's potential second round opponent Chén Zĭfán has struggled on the Asian Tour this year, he did beat Scott Donaldson in the Wuxi Classic last summer.

They're snooker players, it's a snooker tournament. That's why they're there. I actually respect that. They're willing to travel half way across the world, for what might only be one best of seven match. Model pros and all that. :hatoff:

Sorry, completely wrong about Xú Sī's next opponent, it's Craig Steadman.

World amateur champion Yán Bĭngtāo lost to his compatriot Lĭ Yŭjĭn - well and truly surprised at that one.

A second shock as Lóng Zéhuáng got blitzed 4-0 by Jì Zhìjūn to blow his chance of a Pro Tour place, whilst Zhào Xīntóng failed to get past Paul Davison, losing 4-3, not so much a shock.

And as for Noppon Saengkham - didn't even get to play the dangerous opponent I'd highlighted, losing instead to the lowly-ranked Gĕng Míngqí ...

I'd missed that Chén Fēilóng is in a similar situation, he needs a second round win against Chinese pro Yú Délù.

Of the players further back and needing second and third round wins to have a Pro Tour chance, intrigued to see Fāng Xióngmàn drawn in a section with all Chinese players, although two of them are pros. Fāng Xióngmàn has run into Tony Drago and Ben Woollaston at the second round stage of previous events this season, but did have a good run in event two in 2013.
