The EBSA European Championships for Men, Women and Masters will be played in Sofia, Bulgaria from 1st - 11th June. The Mens Champion will earn a Pro Tour spot for the next two seasons, albeit starting a little late.

Michael Leslie, who is falling off the Pro Tour, has been entered for the Mens European Championship.

If he won, would he fall foul of the WPBSA rule not allowing players to regain their place through an amateur event IN THE SAME SEASON, or would he be allowed in as actually the event's not in the same season (as the new Pro season will have started by then), even though the Pro Tour place on offer is for 2014/15 and 2015/16 ?!?

Other Scottish entries are Eden Sharav, Robert Carlisle, Ross Vallance and Gary Thomson in the Mens, and Colin McAlpine and Michael Philbin in the Masters.

Also, I see England's Hannah Jones and Vicky Carter are now on the Ladies entry list. :-D

English entries in the Mens are Mitchell Mann, Callum Downing, Nick Jennings, John Whitty and Ben Harrison. :D

And in the Masters Wayne Brown, Jamie Bodle, Graham Beardmore, and Danny Connolly.

John Perring has been added to the Welsh team for the Masters, and Alen Matic to the Irish team.

Poland's team for the Mens will be ex-pro Kacper Filipiak, plus Patryk Masłowski, Mateusz Baranowski, Grzegorz Biernadski and Krzysztof Wróbel.

The Group Stage draws:

Ladies - http://esnooker.pl/turnieje/2014/me/en/mek_2014.php

Masters - http://esnooker.pl/turnieje/2014/me/en/mes_2014.php

Mens - http://esnooker.pl/turnieje/2014/me/en/mes_2014.php

Realistically the group stages are, for the top players, about positioning themselves in the draw, in the Men's it's unlikely any of the challengers for a Pro Tour place will fall by the wayside at this stage ...

The group matches have now started.

Lots of matches to play across the 3 tournaments, so the tournaments don't get down to the nitty-gritty of the knockout stages until next Sunday, when the Men's Last 64 and Masters Last 32 will be played.

Monday week (9th) will see the Mens Last 32 and Last 16s for all 3 tournaments.

Tuesday 10th will be quarter finals and semi finals day, with the finals being played on Wednesday 11th.

EDIT - just to note, in the Mens four players didn't register, so now 92 players - 12 group of 6, 4 groups of 5, 4 players go through from each group. Ladies 3 groups of 6, one of 5, four to go through. Masters 4 groups of 7, 4 groups of 6, 4 to go through.

Darren Morgan could easily enter the Mens contest and win a spot on the main tour he is that good and head and shoulders above anyone else in the tournament

Morgan's played 6 frames of snooker so far, winning each. Breaks of 123, 106, 70, 57, 41, 40.

Also in the Masters, Alan Trigg knocked in a 113.

Ireland's Josh Boileau was in top form in his Group R match with Adam Stefanow of Poland, won 4 - 2 with breaks of 120, 119, 53 and 52. Stefanow had an 82 break too.

Most of the other matches in the Men's have pitched the better players against the less-good players, a lot of 4-0 results. One surprise, at least to me, as the normally-consistent Shay Arama of Israel lost 4-2 in Group A to Serbia's Sasa Stojanovic.

Some results that pitched some of the more competitive players together (Letter at the front is their Group)

B. Thomas Salling (Denmark) 4 - 3 Antti Mannila (Finland)
B. Roman Dietzel (Germany) 4 - 2 Thomas Salling (Denmark)
F. Rares Sinca (Romania) 4 - 3 Bernharð Bernharðsson (Iceland)
G. Kevin Van Hove (Belgium) 4 - 3 Ivailo Pekov (Bulgaria)
H. Bratislav Krastev (Bulgaria) 4 - 2 Antonis Poullos (Cyprus)

Callum Downing had a break of 103 in his match.

England's Vicky Carter was unfortunate enough to run into Wendy Jans in top form, the Belgian hit breaks of 91 and 47 in her 3 - 0 win, more the type of play you'd get from the Mens competition.

Meanwhile Hannah Jones coasted to 3 - 0 wins against (probably) the two weakest ladies in her group.

EDIT - Just to add, nice 68 by Russia's Daria Sirotina in her match today.

Plenty of good scoring in the Men's. George Louka from Cyprus has had a 116 break, Israel’s Shachar Ruberg a 114, Duane Jones a 109, Alex Taubman a 104, Callum Downing a 103, and Kacper Filipiak a break of 100.

Video of Ruberg’s break:

Good match in Group M between Filipiak and Germany’s Felix Frede, went to a decider which Kacper led 62-22, Frede pulled it back to 62-50, at which point there was an exchange of safety’s on the brown, which Kacper took, and the blue and pink also to win 4 – 3.

Other Key Matches:

A. Patryk Masłowski (Poland) 4 – 2 Sasa Stojanovic (Serbia)

Kevin van Hove of Belgium was the man in form today, knocking in breaks of 120, 93 and 53 in beating Roberto Bartol of Croatia 4 – 0 in Group G.

Other results of interest in the Mens competition (letter at the front is the group):

A. Saku Veikkanen (Finland) 4 – 3 Patryk Masłowski (Poland)
(Veikkanen has now beaten all of the 3 leading players in the Group, guess he's for real as a new talent - he's 17 - coming through!)
A. Lukas Kleckers (Germany) 4 – 3 Shay Arama (Israel)
B. Rodney Goggins (Ireland) 4 – 0 Thomas Salling (Denmark)
(Goggins had a 100 break)
B. Roman Dietzel (Germany) 4 – 1 Antti Mannila (Finland)
C. Mitchell Mann (England) 4 – 2 Grzegorz Biernadski (Poland)
D. Krzysztof Wróbel (Poland) 4 – 0 Duane Jones (Wales)

R. Josh Boileau (Ireland) 4 – 1 Lukas Krenek (Czechia)

In the Ladies tournament, a nice win for Hannah Jones over Yana Shut today, she takes on Nikoleta Nikolova of Bulgaria next, as Mark said, a slight step up each time in quality of opponent, quite good for her the way that's worked out ...

Five players have four wins without having dropped a frame in the Masters - Darren Morgan, Alan Trigg, Esa Oikarinen, Mark Tuite and Jamie Bodle. Something has to give as Tuite and Bodle play each other tomorrow. Yvan van Velthoven will probably take away Esa Oikarinen unblemished record (van Velthoven has only dropped one frame so far). And Darren Morgan faces the also-unbeaten Tom O'Driscoll.

Oldest man in the tournament John Terry (the 1968 and 1969 Welsh Junior Champion!) is also unbeaten, and will face Alan Trigg on Friday, but first must face Rene Dikstra of the Netherlands, who's a handy player. Wayne Brown of England and Jon Perring of Wales may also still be unbeaten when they play on Friday.

Dane Rune Kampe, England's Graham Beardmore and Misja Van Vonderen of the Netherlands are the only unbeatens left in Groups D, G and H respectively. Misja Van Vonderen has won all his games 3-2, including a victory over Ireland's Tom Gleeson.

Darren Morgan's breaks so far - 123, 106, 90, 70, 64, 60, 57, 43, 42, 41, 40, 40

Been lurking here for some time but registered now to shed some light on this young prospect. :-)

Veikkanen really is a great prospect, he made the transition from pool to snooker just last year and immediately won the first tournament he took part in - Finnish 1. division ranker. For last season he moved up to the Finnish Premier League (Mestaruussarja) and you guessed it, won the series on his first try winning two out of seven tournaments he participated.
Definetely one to watch in the future <ok>

Three big breaks in 3 frames is impressive, but I think Darren Morgan's just showing off now - FOUR big breaks in 3 frames - well ok, only a 43 in the first frame. Then a 93. Then a 53 and a 77 in the final frame.

Also in the Masters, close match between unbeatens John Terry and Alan Trigg, with Trigg edging it 3 - 2.

Russia Daria Sirotina won an unbeatens battle in Ladies Group C by the same scoreline against Diana Stateczny, whilst in Group B's unbeatens match-up her doubles partner Anastasia Nachaeva edged Hannah Jones 3-2. The final qualifying place in that group will go to the winner of Yana Shut's match against Poland's Weronika Nowicka.
