Asian Championship 2014, UAE 26 Apr - 3 May

Postby roy142857

The Asian Snooker Championship will be played in Al Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates from 26th April to 3rd May (also the re-arranged venue for the World Under 21 Championship from 10th to 18th May).

The winner should be offered a place on the Pro Tour for the next 2 seasons.

Defending Champion is Afghanistan's Saleh Mohammad, who didn't take up his place on the Pro Tour last year, and last years runner-up Omar Al Kojah of Syria is also competing.

Also involved will be China's Zhào Xīntóng, runner-up at the 2013 IBSF World Championship, and the 2012 IBSF World Champion, Pakistan's Muhammad Asif.

Other players of note include Dharminder Lilly (India), Yuttapop Pakpoj (Thailand), Niú Zhuàng (China), Andy Lee (Hong Kong), Karam Fatima (Syria), Kamal Chawla (India), Hamza Akbar (Pakistan), Alan Lin Tang Ho (Hong Kong), Soheil Vahedi (Iran), Marvin Lim Chun Kiat (Singapore), Rory Thor (Malaysia), Raymond Fung (Hong Kong), Brijesh Damani (India), Mohammad Rais Senzahi (Afghanistan), Mohammad Reza (Malaysia), Ehsan Heydari Nezhad (Iran), Mohammed Al Joaker (UAE), 2004 Asian Under 21 Champion Pramual Jantad (Thailand), Mohsen Bukshaisha (Qatar), Tommy Ang Boon Chin (Singapore), Chén Zĭfán (China), Mohamed Shehab (UAE) and 2005 Asian Under 21 Champion Moh Keen Hoo (Malaysia).

Also there are players from Bahrain, Iraq, Japan, Jordan, Kuwait, Mongolia, Palestine, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Sri Lanka and Taiwan.

Sadly no entries from Indonesia or Myanmar, despite their players having done well at last years SEA Games.

In the early group action, Rory Thor of Malaysia has beaten Marvin Lim Chun Kiat of Singapore 4 - 2 and China's Chén Zĭfán beat Tommy Ang Boon Chin 4 - 3. Moh Keen Ho (Malaysia) beat the host nation's Mohammed Shehab 4 - 3.

I've also seen a post by Mohammad Reza of Malaysia that he won his match against Afghanistan's Mohammad Rais Senzahi, although the result was given out by the organisers the other way round.

Saleh Mohammad of Afghanistan beat India's Dharminder Lilly 4 - 2, and Iran's Amir Sarkhosh won 4 - 2 against China's Niú Zhuàng. Opening wins too for Mohsen Bukshaishah (Qatar), Omar Al Kojah (Syria), Andy Lee (Hong Kong) and China's Zhào Xīntóng.

For the Group stages there are 16 groups, I think 12 with 4 players, 4 with 5 players.

Most players have completed 2 or 3 games.

Players that are unbeaten:

Saleh Mohammad (Afghanistan) Group A (3 from 3)
Omar Al Kojah (Syria) Group B (3 from 3)
Khalid Al Khamali (UAE) Group D (2 from 2)
Andy Lee Chun Wai (Hong Kong) Group E (3 from 3)
Muhammad Asif (Pakistan) Group F (3 from 3)
Kamal Chawla (India) Group G (2 from 2)
Lertsattayathorn Kritsanut (Thailand) Group K (2 from 2)
Ehsan Heydari Nezhad (Iran) Group L (3 from 3)
Chén Zĭfán (China) Group O (2 from 2)

Groups M and N look like they may have a battle between 2 unbeaten players:
Mohammed Al Joaker (UAE) Group M (3 from 3)
Pramul Jantad (Thailand) Group M (2 from 2)
Mohsen Bukshaishah (Qatar) Group N (3 from 3)
Sargelen Batdelgar (Mongolia) Group N (2 from 2)

Group P WILL have a battle between 2 unbeatens, as Asjad Iqbal of Pakistan and Moh Keen Hoo of Malaysia are unbeaten and will play each other in the final match in the group.

In Group C Zhào Xīntóng (China) lost 4 - 1 to Yuttapop Pakpoj of Thailand. Iran's Saeed Abooyesani has beaten Pakpoj, whilst Zhào Xīntóng beat Abooyesani.

A similarly tight battle in Group H. Hamza Akbar of Pakistan beat Alan Lin Tang Ho (Singapore), Lin Tang Ho beat Iran's Soheil Vahedi, Vahedi beat Akbar.

Not quite sure what is going on in Group I, as mentioned above Malaysia's Rory Thor beat Marvin Lim Chun Kiat of Singapore but it's the only match he's listed as having played, so Lim CHun Kiat leads the group having won his other 2 matches.

The Group stages have finished. Two from each of the 16 groups go through to the Last 32

A number of the seeded players failed to go through - Karam Fatima of Syria (Group G), Mohammed Rais Senzahi of Afghanistan (Group K), Tommy Ang Boon Chin of Singapore (Group O) and the host nation's Mohammed Shehab (Group P)

Unluckiest competitors were those losing out on frame difference (particularly bad news for Iran). Those finishing 3rd despite just 1 loss were Saeed Abooyesani (Iran), Khalid Al Kamali (UAE) and Soheil Vahedi (Iran).

The qualifiers are:

Group A Saleh Mohammed (Afghanistan), Dharminder Lilly (India)
Group B Omar Al Kojah (Syria), Laith Al Naser (Jordan)
Group C Yuttapop Pakpoj (Thailand), Zhào Xīntóng (China)
Group D Niú Zhuàng (China), Amir Sarkhosh (Iran)
Group E Andy Lee Chun Wai (Hong Kong), Alvin Barbero (Philippines)
Group F Muhammad Asif (Pakistan), Abdulrahman Al Shamsi (UAE)
Group G Kamal Chawla (India), Omar Al Alajlani (Saudi Arabia)
Group H Hamza Akbar (Pakistan), Alan Lin Tang Ho (Hong Kong)
Group I Rory Thor Chuan Leong (Malaysia), Marvin Lim Chun Kiat (Singapore)
Group J Raymond Fung Kwok Wai (Hong Kong), Baldandorj Batsukh (Mongolia)
Group K Lertsattayathorn Kritsanut (Thailand), Mohammad Reza Hasan (Malaysia)
Group L Ehsan Heydari Nezhad (Iran), Hussain Ahmad Mohammad Rimsen (Sri Lanka)
Group M Pramul Jantad (Thailand), Mohammed Al Joaker (UAE)
Group N Mohsen Bukshaishah (Qatar), Sargelen Batdelgar (Mongolia)
Group O Chén Zĭfán (China), Hung Chuang Ming (Taiwan)
Group P Moh Keen Hoo (Malaysia), Asjad Iqbal (Pakistan)

Malaysian players doing really well, they've struggled to get funding to get to tournaments in recent years, but showing how good they are.

China's policy of keep sending young players to these tournaments worked at the IBSF World Championship last year, but rather back-fired here.

Sorry, apparently one of those results was the wrong way round ... so less good for Malaysia!

Ehsan Heydari Nezhad (Iran) beat Mohammad Reza Hasan (Malaysia)

Three results from the quarter finals so far :

Ehsan Heydari Nezhad (Iran) 5 - 2 Lertsattayathorn Kritsanut (Thailand)
Alan Lin Tang Ho (Hong Kong) v Hung Chuang Ming (Taiwan)

Muhammad Asif Toba (Pakistan) 1 - 5 Rory Thor Chuan Leong (Malaysia)
Kamal Chawla (India) 5 - 3 Moh Keen Hoo (Malaysia)

Remaining quarter final :

Alan Lin Tang Ho (Hong Kong) 3 - 5 Hung Chuang Ming (Taiwan)

Edit - just to note some of the press reports are saying the 'Chinese Taipei' (i.e. Taiwanese) player is called Chung Ming Hung - no idea which is right! (Anyone?)

Next years Championship has been awarded provisionally to Malaysia (with Iran the reserve), and the 2015 Asian Six Reds & Team Championship was awarded to Iran. The 2016 Asian Championship has been awarded to Qatar, I suspect this is part of the new Asian Billiard Sports Championship, which will be in Doha in Qatar (16 - 24 January), rather than a separate competition (covers Snooker, Pool, Billiards and Carom) - but I'm honestly not sure.

The 2015 Asian Under 21 Championship decision was deferred, with Myanmar, Singapore and China invited to consider bidding.

Semi finals

Hung Chuang Ming (Taiwan) 6 - 5 Ehsan Heydari Nezhad (Iran)
Rory Thor Chuan Leong (Malaysia) 6 - 2 Kamal Chawla (India)

So one of Hung Chuang Ming and Rory Thor will claim a Pro Tour place.

Have to say I know nothing about Hung Chuang Ming, not even if the name is right as I've now seen3 different versions (but haven't found anything in Chinese characters) ... and hoping if he wins that entry of a Taiwanese player into the Pro Tour doesn't cause a problem with entry into competitions in China ... anyone know how China handles such situations in other sports?

I dont think it will be an issue, well it isnt in tennis... Just last week there was a ATP Challenge Tour event in Shenzen and 6 players from Chinese Taipei entered.

In fact Chinese Taipei sent players to the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, winning 8 medals in cue sports.

THE FINAL

Hung Chuang Ming (Taiwan) 3 - 7 Rory Thor Chuan Leong (Malaysia)

Congratulations to Rory Thor, Asian Snooker Champion 2014 ! :win:

Should have his Pro Tour card soon (do they actually get a card?), can't see Rory turning it down.

:D
