European Under 21 Championship 18-23 March Bucharest

Postby roy142857

The EBSA European Under 21 Championship will be held from 18th-23rd March in Bucharest, Romania. (To be followed by the European Team Championship at the same venue). 100 players have been entered.

A strong set of entries from the British Isles:

England - Oliver Lines, Ashley Carty, Sanderson Lam, Clayton Humphries
Ireland - Josh Boileau, Daniel Dempsey, Ryan Cronin, David Cassidy, Stephen Bateman
Isle of Man - Darryl Hill
Northern Ireland - Declan Brennan
Scotland - Dylan Craig, Lee Mein, Rhys Clark, Joseph McLaren
Wales - Sam Thomas, Jamie Clarke, Edward Topham, Tom Rees, Duane Jones

Yet again the youngest entry is 8 year old Iulian Boiko from the Ukraine.

Other players of note include sole female entry Yana Shut of Belarus, Andrea Ploner and Dominik Scherübl of Austria, Jeff Jacobs from Belgium, Germany's Lukas Kleckers, Andres Petrov of Estonia, Shachar Ruberg from Israel, Malta's Brian Cini, Benjamin McCabe from Sweden and a strong Polish quintet - former Champion Kacper Filipiak, Adam Stefanów, Patryk Masłowski, Grzegorz Biernadski and Mateusz Baranowski.

Group stages underway, with Sanderson Lam winning his opening match, including a break of 92.

Groups continue tomorrow and Thursday (they're all best of 5s), Friday sees Last 64, Last 32 and Last 16, Saturday quarters and semis, with the final being on Sunday morning.

There are 15 groups of 6 players and one group with 7 players, so 3 of the 100 entrants have dropped out, not sure who. With 4 to go through from each group, can't see anyone significant missing out on a place in the Last 64 in all honesty.

And adding to those with 2 wins and no frames dropped, Sandy Lam, Ed Topham, Stephen Bateman, Daniel Dempsey, Austria's Dominik Scherübl, Bulgaria's Georgi Velichkov, Belgium's Jeff Jacobs, plus Poles Kacper Filipiak and Adam Stefanów.

Best match of the day was probably Benjamin McCabe of Sweden against Israel's Maor Shalom, which Shalom edged 3-2 from 2-1 down, including a nice break of 62 to take the final frame.

A couple of century breaks - Rhys Clark had a 105, Oli Lines a 104. Clark also had 2 half century + breaks in each of his two 3 - 1 wins.

The last players to play their second matches did so this morning, with Duane Jones, Ryan Cronin, Joseph McLaren, Mateusz Baranowski and Patryk Masłowski of Poland, and Germany's Sascha Breuer and Lukas Kleckers, joining those who haven't dropped a frame after 2 matches.

One of the players in that situation, Dominik Scherübl of Austria, crashed in his next match, losing 3-0 to Maor Shalom of Israel. Shalom will face Duane Jones later today.

Ukraine's 8 year old Iulian Boiko won his first match of the tournament, beating local player Stefan Posea, who is 10 years older, 3-1, whilst another Romanian, Theodor Teaca, suffered a 3-0 defeat to France's 11 year old Nicolas Mortreux (Quite a young average age for all participants in that match, Teaca is 16, referee Desislava Bozhilova is 21, she's the youngest referee at the championship).

First couple of surprising result, leastways to me, as Germany's Sascha Breuer lost 3-2 to Finland's Olli-Pekka Virho and Belgium's Jeff Jacobs lost 3-1 to Andrei Orzan of Romania (perhaps less so that last one, I think I've commented previously that Jacobs can be brilliant one moment, and make a mess of things the next ...)

A close match this morning as Brian Cini of Malta edged Edward Topham 3-2.

A mix of results from late yesterday and early today ...

Joseph McLaren was edged in the closest match so far, Germany's Simon Lichtenberg taking it on the black ball of the final frame, having been 2-1 down. Declan Brennan similarly lost out having been 2-1 up, in his case to Olli-Pekka Virho of Finland - a second 3-2 win for the Finn, who had just beaten Germany's Sascha Breuer in their match

Malta's Brian Cini doing well still, beat Sandy Lam 3 - 0 and Duane Jones had a Total clearance of 120 on his way to a 3 - 1 win against Maor Shalom (Israel), a decent win for Jones this morning too, as he edged Sweden's Benjamin McCabe 3 - 2.

Markus Pfistermüller of Austria, who had lost his previous 2 matches, beat Ashley Carty 3 - 1, but Carty bounced back to win his next match against Estonia's Andres Petrov 3 - 1, whilst Jan Corten (Belgium) surprisingly (to me anyway!) beat Dylan Craig 3 - 2. Another surprise to me was Josh Boileau losing 3 - 1 to Simon Lindblom of Sweden - this morning Lindblom didn't do so well, losing 3 - 0 to Oli Lines.

Clayton Humphries had an excellent 3 - 1 win against Patryk Masłowski of Poland.
