Wednesday 19th of February ~ Sunday 2nd of March at the Newport Center, Newport

So the first round of the Welsh Open has concluded and there have been few top seeds losses with the exception of Robert Milkins, who lost to Scottish teenager Scott Donaldson. The finalists of the last ranking event, Judd Trump and Ding Junhui, reigning World and Masters champion Ronnie O’Sullivan, UK Champion Neil Robertson are still in the event, as well as last year’s finalists, defending champion Stephen Maguire and Stuart Bingham.

Seven Welshmen remain in the event: Dominic Dale, Ryan Day, Jamie Jones, Andrew Pagett, Matthew Stevens, Micheal White and Mark Williams. It’s been 15 years since once won the event and ten years since a Welshman got to the one table set up.

Who will make it to the last 32?

No, Dave Hendon confirmed it on Inside Snooker's preview.

Anyway, it's a problem in the early stages of events. TV'll want to show the top stars, but due to the seedings they'll face players that won't be much of a match (on paper).

Still, it's a shame that there's only one TV table (OTOH they're showing morning sessions this time).

I agree, it felt like half a tournament but I doubt currently that the Beeb or Eurosport have the dough (for snooker that is) to double, triple or quadruple their costs in terms of cameramen/equipment. It might change though of course. I'm always optimistic!

I really wanted to see Dale and Poomy too. Boooo.

Baird takes the second frame in one.

Welsh has been the event he performs best in. Made the last 16 last year and almost knocked out Mark Selby in the last 32 the year before.

Last 128 Perform rigged that up.

they needed yesterday's no play so that BBC Wales could rig their cameras.

Sam Baird having a good run of form at the moment and he has a great chance to beat Maguire today.

Personally these 128 structures have been pretty poor from a spectators PoV. It doesn't require much to install even a webcam above the tables and Barry is missing a huge trick here imo. World Snooker could have a dedicated page with most if not all the tables being streamed no problem at all.

That would give these flat structures more of a complete feeling, the public feels more invested in the tournament and players as they can keep up with what's going on and WS could run ads on every stream page. Win/win.

I have no issue with Flat 128, but you're right.

Take the UK. They originally shortened the matches to BO 11, so they could fit all matches on to TV tables.

I understand that's not possible with the amount of matches now, but it felt like a fraction of matches were televised. Some matches started on reply halfway through.

The Welsh Open looks at least more organized, but they could do with at least two matches being on. Even if one was just one camera, no commentary.
