Postby Wildey

Wednesday 19th of February ~ Sunday 2nd of March at the Newport Center, Newport

The Welsh Open is one of the longest established tournaments on the World Snooker tour with only the World Championship, Masters and UK Championship with a longer history, it was established in 1992 and the first Ranking tournament wins for Ken Doherty in 1993, Mark Williams in 1996, Paul Hunter in 1998, Mark Selby in 2008 and Allister Carter in 2009.

As yet the Draw is not out so i cant comment on players that are competing this year.

But can someone from the pack win their first Ranking tournament this week?

Im going on Holiday to Norway and Denmark starting off today so i wont be on here much but ill be back in plenty of time for the Last 32 of this event.

Ronnie O'Sullivan has entered does that mean the Welsh Open is a Major?

It depends on whether he wins.

It's a well established event, but the format means it will never be taken seriously as an important tournament.

dom has done commentary for euro sport and the WC for network BBC when Parrot and Davis was still in the event.

Really? I don't remember that at all. Must be too much beer.

By my reckoning the first 2 rounds won't be televised, is that it?

Coverage only starts on Monday 24th, on ES and BBC Wales, so I guess the first 2 rounds won't even be on WS streaming.

So from the last 32 onwards will all the matches be televised? 2 tables like in previous years?

Coverage will start from last 64 as first four days are last 128 with a day with no play presumably to recover the tables.

Edit: Double checked WS's documents and there's definitely streaing for the first four days as well, two tables per session. Not bad as each session only has four matches. Worth considering though that last year BBC Wales didn't bring cameras to most of the morning sessions.

So Sunday 23rd will be the day with no play I presume.

Will it still be 2 televised tables like in previous years? I reckon may be another 2 non-televised from the Last 64.

Doesn't say about number of BBC Wales table, but I'll assume two.

Also there are four tables up and including the last 32 stage, after which there'll be only two tables.

PS 23rd is the rest day, like you guessed.

So Mitchell Travis hopes to down the Rocket when they meet in the Last 128.

"Ronnie's the one player I have always wanted to play," said Travis, who is not on the professional tour but has gained a place in several ranking events this season thanks to his results in 2013 Q School.

"When the draw came out I was scrolling down it and I couldn't see my name or Ronnie's. Then when I got to the bottom and saw we'd been drawn together, I couldn't believe it. I put a message on Facebook, and within a few hours I had over 150 'likes' and a lot of comments.

"I watched Ronnie on TV at the Masters and he made the others look like novices. But if I play well I've got a chance and I have proved I can live with the top players. My confidence is through the roof at the moment and I will feel like I did at the UK - I'll enjoy myself and I've got nothing to lose and everything to gain."

He certainly caused a big upset when he beat Fu at the Uk Champs, and I liked his attitude in general.

But this is a far diferent prospect and I think he'll be too much in awe over the fact he'll face his idol and that won't help him.

Still, anything can happen, and like he says he has absolutely nothing to lose.

It's never beyond the realms of possibility for any pro to beat another in a best of 7 (is it still 7?). I think that with the smaller tournaments like this, Ronnie doesn't come playing his absolutely concentrated best anyway... so it's as good a chance as any.

The early stages aren't best of 7 are they?
