Re: Rotterdam Open (European Tour 2) Disscusion !!

Postby SnookerFan

World Snooker just mentioned on twitter that the players are wearing Polo Shirts in this even, and put up a picture.

What do people think about this? Like a lot men, I rarely have an opinion on what other people are wearing. But it has struck me as odd that in these last few years the dress code has stayed much the same in snooker. With Barry Hearn trying to revolutionise the sport, I've always wondered why we've stuck so rigidly to the players wearing waistcoats and bow-ties. It's pretty old fashioned, and somewhat more importantly it can't be comfortable for the players to play in. I've always wondered why they don't just knock that tradition on the head.

What do other people think?

Agree entirely!

Bad luck to Ben anyway, loses 4-3 to Stevens. By all accounts he didn't have much run of the ball but then that's a part of his game because I've seen it myself so many times it's not funny. And that's not bias, he really does get an extraordinary amount of bad run.

The "traditional" outfit adds class to the sport and in doing so receives sponsorship opportunities from higher end sponsors who want their products associated with class.

You don't see any high end sponsorship with 9-ball and such and I don't blame them. No dress code and you wind up with players who look like hood rats, hardly the image high end sponsors want.

I think the polo shirts are quite good and considering that you can play up to 4 matches a day in a PTC the ''traditional'' outfit wasn't a good option really .I would stick to these polo shirts for the PTC's and the Qualifiers and to the waistcoat and bow-tie for the major ranking events and the Masters. Can't imagine seeing the players in polo shirts at the Crucible.

Very good opinon snookerfan97,could,nt agree with you more!. :-)

On another topic,....As far as this tourneys concerned,I think it,s great that it,s even taken place, after all it,s summer and many are,nt in the mood to play snooker, never mind watch it.

I for sure won,t be watchin much of this tourney,in fact i might even skip it,but as i say,it,s great that it,s bein held regardless that it,s summer, there,s always some who will still want to play and watch no matter how hot it is. <ok>

conors9 wrote:Probably a silly question, but how many people do Snooker Island sponsor and who are they? Seen Ben today with Snooker Island on, do you go for youngsters or is there no policy?

Ultimately we aim to promote the grassroots of the game because to the casual snooker fan a lot of the lower ranked players and amateurs are unknowns and are therefore "rubbish", when the truth is they are all exceptional players and some of them will end up becoming the top players in the game. They are the player from your local club or the one everyone from your local league talks about, the one who beats everyone and who you get behind and believe they stand a chance at the big time.

Ben has been associated with us for a while now and it's a landmark to get the Snooker Island logo on tv without relying on hammers in the crowd with SI logo t-shirts (i.e. me and a few members here :-D).

Ben is a really nice lad who is very naturally talented and is great to watch when playing snooker. He's had around 20 maximum breaks, one of them against me when I failed in my mission of the frame; to stop him going for a max viewtopic.php?f=25&t=3245#p208573, and he even had one against his girlfriend Sunti in a 24 hour snooker marathon (according to Eurosport commentary, I'll have to ask him about that).

Ben stood out for the way he approaches and plays the game, and his enthusiasm is infectious. He loves snooker and practices hard and is willing to learn, but ultimately he has the panache which makes him one, given the choice, you have to watch.

Today was a big step for Ben. By all accounts he should have won but had a lot of bad run which you can't control obviously, but he's the type of player who seems be on the thick end more than he gets lucky. You know how Robbo and Higgins always seem to get the run? Well Ben is the one who doesn't get it when it matters, and when he does he seems genuinely embarrassed. Jimmy White was like that you know.

So watch this space for future badge wearers. The better the site does the more we can do for the grassroot players like Ben. There are plenty more worthy of inclusion.
