2013 African Championship 18-28 Jun Marrakech

Postby roy142857

This years African Snooker Championship will be held in Morocco - originally I'd seen a date of 8th June for the start, still says that on the IBSF website but the Tanzanian press is saying 15th - 22nd June. Part of the reason for their interest is that the 2014 championship will be held in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania - supposedly also in June.

Also mentioned was that the March Mug Tournament (great name!) in Tanzania in (you've guessed it) March was won by Arjun Lavingia 3 - 2 against Omar Balsara.

No idea if the plans have worked out, but the organisers in Morocco were hoping to host an Afro-Asian Cup at the end of their event between their winner and runner-up and the winner and the runner-up from the Asian Championship which is currently taking place.

Now confirmed by the African Billiards and Snooker Federation that the African Championship will take place from 18th - 28th June in Marrakech, Morocco. The website also shows a link (not working yet) for a Six Reds Championship too. Another link that isn't working yet is to 'live broadcasting'.

Six Reds Championship gets under way today with a qualifying round and runs through to 21st, 48 entries in a straight knockout format.

Tunisia, Morocco, Libya, Sudan, Mozambique, Mauritius, Mozambique, Egypt, Algeria and Tanzania represented but no South African in the Six Reds.

Defending champion Mohammad Ibrahim of Egypt isn't entered.

Last year the top 2 were invited to the World Six Reds in Thailand, not sure if that's the case this year.

A quick round up of the group winners as the knockout competition gets under way, both Peter Francisco and Faaris Khan of South Africa ended up second in their group behind local players:

Arjun Lavingia (Tanzania)
Adem Gerwash (Libya)
Sebtaoui Imad (Morocco)
Mohamed Ettagi (Morocco)
Youssef Seklaf (Morocco)
Ali Abouhedia (Egypt)
Chaouki Yousfi (Morocco)
Mohamed Elmola (Egypt)
Wael Talaat (Egypt)
Khlaid Belaied (Libya)

A small number of results so far for the Last 32, only surprise has been Egypt's Ali Abouhedia losing 4-3 to Miloud Al Gharriani of Libya.

The final may well have finished, but I don't know the result yet, only the semis:

Khalid Belaied (Libya) 5 - 4 Karim Elabd (Egypt)

Peter Francisco (South Africa) 5 - 3 Chaouki Yousfi (Morocco)

Last year Francisco won but the nomination for a Pro Tour place went to runner-up Mohammed Khairy, might we have a Libyan on Tour?

No real point awarding tour spots to players that hasent a chance of succeeding the reason a 1980s pro wins these tournament because the opposition cant cut it so if Peter wont take it up then nobody should get on instead.

Kind of agree, think I've said before that African Oceania North and South American players should play off for one tour spot. Morocco's Chaouki Yousfi gave Francisco his toughest game in the semi final (bar for a loss in groups just after arriving in Morocco) and should be going to the Six Reds in Thailand, he's probably the most interesting prospect but I'm fairly sure no-one at the standard required.

Well, I see from snooker.orgs provisional rankings that Khaled Belaied is on there so presumably Fransisco said no again. Does that make Belaied the first Libyan professional? More to the point, will it be tough for him to get visas to play/live in the UK?

If I remember rightly there's now only one space left to fill on the tour.
