BetVictor Welsh Open Discussion !!!!

Postby Wildey

Final Stages Monday 11th ~Sunday 17th of February at The Newport Centre

I wont be home during this tournament so im putting up one thread to cover the whole event from the Last 64 Round.

The Welsh Open is well established on the snooker calendar despite problems getting sponsors during the latter years. But BBC Wales' support of the event has meant it's been able to survive where other British tournaments have been axed. This year the event will be sponsored by BetVictor.

This year once again it's in Newport where it's been for 17 of its 22 year history after 5 years between 1999 and 2003 in Cardiff.

Ding Junhui will be defending his title against strong opposition from John Higgins, Mark Selby and Judd Trump.

Recent Tournament Winner in Germany Ali Carter will be starting the event in the "Qualifiers" at the World Snooker Academy Sheffield so it'll be interesting to see if former champion Ali Carter qualifies for Newport.

8 former champions will be starting out but who will win it this year?

Another first season pro, been having some good runs lately and has been beating player higher ranked than him but hasn't really beat anyone of Robbo's class yet. If Robbo is really off, Burns could punish, but not seeing him winning.

Ian Burns

Apparently it's no cameras for every morning session except this one. Would be stupid if they didn't show the defending champion, so I'm guessing they just made an exception for Ding. Still rubbish though.

skull

damn i thought it would cover all mornng sessions

Ding could have a good run. He's been in pretty good form since winning that Scottish PTC, but has just run into better players in the early rounds because of seeding.

Not seeing that happening here, because he can take every player in his quarter fairly easily, except maybe Allen in the short format.
