Haikou World Open Qualifying Discussion !!

Postby Wildey

Tuesday 18th~Friday 21st of December at The World Snooker Academy,Sheffield

The World Open started life in Scotland in 2010 as a replacement for the Grand Prix and won by the then World Champion Neil Robertson.

It was a new initiative that invited amateurs to participate in a World Snooker professional run tournament, but following the BBC Snooker cut backs it was canceled and was in limbo for 18 months until it was snapped up in China as part of the growing Chinese World Snooker Tour.

Mark Allen won the event beating Stephen Lee 10-1 in the final.

Despite the change of format from the original concept amateurs are still invited. This year Gareth Allen, Duane Jones, Michael Wild and Justin Astley will be taking their place in Round 1 alongside players that includes Aditya Mehta, Kurt Maflin, Tony Drago, Zhang Anda and Martin O'Donnell.

Joining in Round 2 will be the likes of Andy Hicks, Liu Chuang, Alan McManus, Jimmy White, Mike Dunn and two up and coming stars Cao Yupeng and Luca Brecel.

Round 3 will include Jack Lisowski, Liang Wenbo, Michael White, Xiao Guodong, Jamie Jones, Nigel Bond and 6 times World Champion Steve Davis.

And finally Round 4 Peter Ebdon, Robert Milkins, Ryan Day, Joe Perry, Martin Gould, Jamie Cope and the 1997 World Champion Ken Doherty will be taking to the table.

Few days before Christmas but who will be celebrating the festive period with a ticket to Haikou?

Jamie Cope v Rory McLeod/Luca Brecel/Zhang Anda/Michael Wild

Michael Wild - I know nothing about
Brecel - class player, very tricky match
Rory McLeod - hot and cold player, grinder, journeyman - tricky match
Jamie Cope - talented but often misfiring, bad temperament, hold and cot

ZHANGER will do well to qualify from that qual route, but I am hopeful as ever. :tree: :xmas1: :tree: :xmas1:

Michael Leslie beat Michael Wasley 5-3. Surprise result considering how well Wazza was doing recently. But it should give Leslie a boost. It's not uncommon that players qualifying through international amateur events struggle to adapt on the MT. Neither the style of play, nor the opposition are similar by any means.
Tian alsi through by the same score, nothing surprising there though.

Are you complaining?

Weren't you one of the ones who hated the World Open when it was best of fives?

Scott Donaldson is really impressing on his first season on the Main tour when you consider his First PTC was PTC 11 Last season played about this time just before Christmas.

just gonna tune into Kurts match

that was the first id spoke to him at the PTC and he is a top bloke.

Funny when i said i admired his natural style of play and i likened him to a Drago or Figuerido type. He said "is that cos im fat too?" :D

According to Janie Watkins on twitter Jamie O'Neill had to withdraw due to illness.
If so Ian burns gets a bye and I suppose there will be another match picked for streaming.

Looks like Khairy finally made it to an event. He'll be at a disadvantage as he hasn't played in any tournaments this season so won't be match sharp at all. Also shame Adi lost but Scott Donaldson seems to be improving. He'll have compatriot and recent PTC runner up Ants McGill as his opponent.
