Now, I appreciate that that this might be because later in the year I hit the big 3-0, but is nobody else bothered that therE are people born in 1992 that are considered old enough to be adults?

Nobody?

Nobody...

SHI SHUAMGYANG is even born 1993, meaning he's 17...

now I remember a lot of fans going mad because Luca Brecel who was only 14 was not allowed on the MT....

But I do agree: 18 should be the absolute limit.

Re: Meet the wildcards

I don't like the idea of wildcards in ranking tournaments. I mean, I know the wildcards don't get any ranking points for what they do and it puts Chinese players in to create an interest for the Chinese audience, but it seems a weird idea. I mean, having some players that get ranking points for their successes, and some that don't seem odd. Personally, I think they should just apply the same top-16 and 16-qualifiers to these events they do to normal ranking events, and maybe have an invitational tournament where the top players play Chinese born players.

If snooker has hit a boom period in China, as we are lead to believe, surely the fact that there are already established Chinese players should be enough, and they wouldn't have trouble selling tickets anyway to a third event, and it would fill in holes in the calendar. And the fans in China could see a variety. A more traditional ranking event, where players are there on merit, and it can have some outcome on your ranking position, and a more relaxed invitational event where you can get behind your countrymen. That way the youngsters in the country would still be getting the experience, without the need for making odd rules up to a ranking event.

agree Wild cards are old hat now.

I did a few things on the blog a while back questioning the wildcard situation in this event. I understand the reasons for it, but for instance if I was Rod Lawler I'd be pretty miffed at having to qualify again like last year when he didn't against Yu Delu. They have done exactly the same as the other qualifiers to get there and are trying to improve their ranking so how can they if they are met with a fully acclimatised pot the lot hotshot who has been practising for this on Star tables for months? And how do they decide who plays who anyway?

Would they give young Welsh players a go against those trying to make a living in the Welsh Open? I think it's grossly unfair and these guys should be introduced in invitational events until they are good/committed enough to qualify for the tour, but there are some double standards going on at the moment. Get rid of anyone outside the top 32 and bring in the wildcards, as long as they're in a growing market.

The answer is to globalise the tour, then location would not be an issue. Pandering to one nationality over another ain't a good move for fans of the sport. It's got to be equal.

Re: Meet the wildcards

Thats what I find hard to understand really, can see the pulling power of a few locals in their own vicinity but cant see the point of having Indian or Thai wildcards for instance playing in an event in China, no disrespect to Aditya Mehta (who I think played in an earlier one) or Supoj Saenla and any others of that ilk.

Re: Meet the wildcards

Postby sittingchilly

Sad to see Tang Jun won't be joining us for this event. Always remember last year when a giant fly/beetle landed on the end of his nose as he sat in his chair, the camera panned away just as he was moving his hand towards it and the next time he's shown in shot he's chewing merrily away with the fly nowhere to be seen. Of course it was probably just gum but it stil got my imagination running wild lol, not that it always takes alot!
