Asian Snooker Championship 2012

Postby roy142857

The seedings have been announced for the 2012 Asian Snooker Championship which starts next week (20th April) in Doha, Qatar and runs through to April 28th.

1. Aditya Mehta (India)
2. Hossein Vafaei Ayouri (Iran)
3. Pankaj Advani (India)
4. Rais Senzahi (Afghanistan)
5. Kamal Chawla (India)
6. Thepchaiya Un-nooh (Thailand)
7. Jin Long (China)
8. Mohammed Shehab (United Arab Emirates)

Don't think the seeding order effects much, just keeps them apart at the round robin group stage.

52 competitors are entered from 23 countries (Afghanistan, Bahrain, China, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Korea, Kuwait, Lebanon, Mongolia, Pakistan, Palestine, the Philippines, hosts Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Syria, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates)

Some early matches have now been played, most notable being Hong Kong's Fung Kwok Wai defeating Mohammed Al Joaker of the UAE 4 - 3. Pakistan's Muhamad Asif struggled to a 4-3 win over Palestinian Khalid Soliman Alastal, he'll need better form to stand a chance against Aditya Mehta of India tomorrow.

One or two other interesting matches due tomorrow - India's Kamal Chawla v Mohammed Lababi of Iran and Bahrain's Habib Subah v Mohammed Rais Senzahi of Afghanistan for instance.

Chawla beat Lababi 4 - 1 and Senzahi beat Subah 4 - 2 ... in fact all the seeded players won their opening matches. And Thailand's Noppon Saengkham, possibly the best unseeded player, opened with two 4-0 wins

Other players with a good start (two wins from two matches) include Syria's Karam Fatima in Group A, Afghanistan's Nader Khan Sultani and Saleh Mohammed in Groups B and E respectively, in Group C, Ebrahim Alsharrah (Kuwait) and Qatari player Ahmed Saif in Group F.

Group matches are best of seven ... a quick round-up of the group action so far :

Syria's Karam Fatima now has 3 wins from 3 in Group A (and a 140 break), India's Aditya Mehta on 2 wins from 2. Pakistan's Muhamed Asif has lost to both, leaving him in a hole ...

With 3 undefeated players, something has to give soon in Group B! Iran's World Champion Hossein Vafaei Ayouri hasn't dropped a frame yet in his 2 wins, Afghanistan's Nader Khan Sultani has dropped 2 frames in his 3 matches, Omar Alkojah of Syria has two 4-1 wins.

And 3 undefeateds, each with 2 wins, in Group C - India's Pankaj Advani, Ebrahim Alsharrah of Kuwait and Sultan Mohammed of Pakistan. Rouzi Maimaiti, the Chinese player of Uygher descent (so first name is the forename), lost 2-4 to Advani but also has a win but plenty of work to do.

In Group D Mohammed Al Joaker (UAE) has recovered from his loss to Hong Kong's Fung Kwok Wai with 2 wins, whilst Fung Kwok Wai lost against Singapore's Marvin Lim Chun Kiat who is undefeated with 2 wins, as is the seed for the group, Mohamed Rais Senzahi (Afghanistan).

And yet again, 3 undefeated players, this time Group E where seed Kamal Chawla (India), Saleh Mohammed of Afghanistan and Iraq's Firas Kamil Shaba each have 2 wins, each having only dropped 2 frames. Saleh Mohammed has a 117 break.

For Group F Thailand's Thepchaiya Un-Nooh now has 2 wins from 2, as does Ahmed Saif of Qatar. Bahrain's representative in the group has been changed to Mohammed Al Sheikh, who has a loss to Un-Nooh but also a 4-3 win over Mongolia's Batsukh Baldandori.

In Group G seed Jin Long of China has only played one match, and wasn't convincing in beating Ehsan Heydari Nezhad of Iran 4-3. Thailand's Noppon Saengkham has 2 wins from 2 matches.

The 2 undefeated players in Group H are the players that have played only 1 match, seed Mohammed Mustafa Shehab (United Arab Emirates) and Alan Lin Tang Ho of Hong Kong. Susantha Boteju of Sri Lanka lost to Lin Tang Ho but also has a win against Alwadi Yousef of Saudi Arabia.

A further round up of groups with significant movement.

Mohammed Mustafa Shehab (United Arab Emirates) was the first seed to lose a match, to Alan Lin Tang Ho of Hong Kong in Group H. Lin Tang Ho has 3 wins from 3 matches.

In Group A Aditya Mehta of India has 3 wins from 3 matches, including over previously unbeaten Karam Fatima of Syria, who has 3 wins from 4.

In Group B Iran's World Champion Hossein Vafaei Ayouri beat Afghanistan's Nader Khan Sultani 4 - 1 to stay unbeaten, Omar Alkojah of Syria has 4 wins from 4 matches, whilst Sultani has 4 wins from 5 matches.

Pankaj Advani of India stays unbeaten in Group C, Rouzi Maimaiti of China has won 3 of 4, losing to Advani but beating Sultan Muhammed of Pakistan 4 - 0, which is Muhammed's only loss.

Singapore's Marvin Lim Chun Kiat and seed Mohamed Rais Senzahi of Afghanistan remain unbeaten in Group D with 4 and 3 wins respectively.

Noppon Saengkham of Thailand lost in Group G 4 - 3 to Iran's Ehsan Heydari Nezhad, who has only lost to seed Jin Long of China.

Another quick update ...

Aditya Mehta now up to 4 wins from 4 and Karam Fatima on 4 wins from 5 in Group A, everyone else with at least 2 losses.

A key match in Group B as Nader Sultani beat Omar Alkojah 4 - 1, so they both have 1 loss. Hossein Vafaei Ayouri still unbeaten.

In Group C Pakistan's Sultan Muhammed lost to India's Pankaj Advani, who remains unbeaten.

In a close battle in Group D, seeded player Mohamed Rais Senzahi of Afghanistan lost 3-4 to Fung Kwok Wai of Hong Kong. Unbeaten Marvin Lim Chun Kiat of Singapore has played Fung Kwok Wai but still has to play Senzahi.

Group E seed Kamal Chawla (India) remains unbeaten with 3 wins (he beat previously-unbeaten Firas Kamil Shaba of Iraq), likewise Saleh Mohammed of Afghanistan is unbeaten with 3 wins.

For Group F Thailand's Thepchaiya Un-Nooh has 3 wins from 3, as does Ahmed Saif of Qatar.

So surprising that I'm not sure it's correct, the seeded player in Group G, Jin Long of China is shown as losing 4-0 to previously winless Mohamed Al Bin Ali of Qatar ...

Alan Lin Tang Ho of Hong Kong is up to 4 wins from 4 in Group H.

Quick updates to the six groups where the position has moved on a bit ...

Aditya Mehta now 5 wins from 5 in Group A.

In Group B Syria's Omar Alkojah lost to Hossein Vafaei Ayouri of Iran, who is still unbeaten. That loss means that Nader Khan Sultani of Afghanistan just has to beat Khamis Obaidli (who has just 1 win) to guarantee himself a spot in the knock out draw.

India's Pankaj Advani is up to 5 wins from 5 in Group C, Rouzi Maimaiti of China has only lost to Advani and can't be caught.

Group E seed Kamal Chawla (India) remains unbeaten with 4 wins, ditto Saleh Mohammed of Afghanistan, everyone else has at least 2 losses.

Same story in Group F - Thailand's Thepchaiya Un-Nooh has 4 wins from 4, likewise Ahmed Saif of Qatar, everyone else has at least 2 losses.

In Group G Jin Long of China, Noppon Saengkham of Thailand and Ehsan Heydari Nezhad of Iran each have 3 wins and a loss. Jin Long and Saengkham have still to play each other, Nezhad has to play Lin Shu Hong (Taipei) who shouldn't be underestimated as he has 2 wins from 4 matches.

Alan Lin Tang Ho of Hong Kong is up to 4 wins from 4 in Group H.

Marvin Lim Chun Kiat lost 4 - 2 to Mohamed Rais Senzahi, he now finished his group matches with 5 wins and a loss, frame difference +9. Senzahi has 4 wins and loss, frame difference on +7 with only a match against Ali Hussain Ali, who hasn't won more than 1 frame in a match, to go. Fung Kwok Wai also on 4 wins and a loss and frame difference +7, but with a match against Habib Subah, who has 2 wins, still to go

In Group H Alan Lin Tang Ho has finished unbeaten. Seed Mohammed Mustafa Shehab (United Arab Emirates) still has a match to play but already has two more wins than his opponent and all the other players apart from Lin Tang Ho are finished and have a win less than him or more, so he will go through to the knock phase.

Postby roy142857

Syrian Karam Fatima's fifth win from six matches seals his place in the last 16 from Group A, nice frame difference of +13 given he lost 0-4 to Hossein Vafaei Ayouri.

In Group B Nader Khan Sultani of Afghanistan beat Khamis Obaidli (Qatar) to reach the last 16.

In Group G Ehsan Heydari Nezhad of Iran won a close match against Taipei's Lin Shu Hong 4-3 to reach the last 16 and turn the group match between Jin Long of China and Noppon Saengkham of Thailand into a knock out match ...

(always assuming the details on the cue sports india website are right that knock out is straight to last 16 ... been misled on that before!)

Not completely up to date, but century breaks :

Karam Fatima (Syria) 140
Susantha Boteju (Sri Lanka) 118
Pankaj Advani (India) 117, 103
Saleh Mohammed (Afghanistan) 117
Hossein Vafaei Ayouri (Iran) 108

Group stage now finished, update on the two groups with previously-undecided issues:

In Group G what was effectively a knock out match between Noppon Saengkham of Thailand and Jin Long of China was won emphatically by Saengham (4-1), so Jin Long is the only seeded player going home early.

In Group D Fung Kwok Wai of Hong Kong lost his must-win match against Habib Subah of Bahrain 4-1, sending Afghanistan's Mohamed Rais Senzahi into the last 16 along with Sinaporean Marvin Lim Chun Kiat.

So just 16 left, a few 'honourable mentions' of players who've performed well and just missed out. The Pakistani duo of Muhammad Asif and Sultan Mohammed both won 4 matches from 6. Likewise Omar Alkojah of Syria and Fung Kwok Wai of Hong Kong. Ahmad Adnan A Alokaily of Jordan was never 'in it' because of the order of his matches, but walks away having won 3 of 5. Well done to them, but even more so to the players in ...

... the last 16 draw:

Pankaj Advani (India) v Ahmed Saif (Qatar)
Ehsan Heydari Nezhad (Iran) v Marvin Lim Chun Kiat (Singapore)

Noppon Saengkham (Thailand) v Nader Khan Sultani (Afghanistan)
Rouzi Maimaiti (China) v Thepchaiya Un-Nooh (Thailand)

Hossein Vafaei Ayouri (Iran) v Kamal Chawla (India)
Karam Fatima (Syria) v Alan Lin Tang Ho (Hong Kong)

Saleh Mohammed (Afghanistan) v Mohamed Rais Senzahi (Afghanistan)
Mohammed Mustafa Shehab (United Arab Emirates) v Aditya Mehta (India)

(That's 10 countries represented ... pretty good!)

The seeding only really keeps them apart in the Groups, after that it's their performance in the groups that's taken into account - based on average frame difference - the group winners average frame differences were:

1. Pankaj Advani 3.5
2. Aditya Mehta 3.3
3. Hossain Vafaei Ayouri 3.2
4. Thepchaiya Un Nooh 2.8
5. Noppon Saengkham 2.6
6. Alan Lin Tang Ho 2.2
7. Saleh Mohammed 2.0
8. Marvin Lim Chun Kiat 1.5

I think the second placed players from each group are then simply drawn against the group winners, but with 1 lined up to play 8 in the quarter finals if they win through, and so on.

Hope that makes sense!

Aditya Mehta 7 - 5 Pankaj Advani

:win:

Well done to Aditya Mehta!

Don't know what will happen with the Asian 'spots' on the Pro Tour, as the under 21 championship and main championship now won by players who already had Pro Tour spots, hope they offer a place to Pankaj Advani ...
