European Team Championship 2012

Postby roy142857

The EBSA European Team Championship will be played in Sofia, Bulgaria, commencing from just before the end of the Under 21's Championship, running 9th - 16th March. There are Masters and Ladies events too, couldn't see what format any of these team events are played in, anyone know?

One surprise (leastways to me) - apparently Poland have included Kacper Filipiak in their mens team.

British Isles teams:

Mens
England - Robbie Williams / Steve Judd / Michael Wild
Ireland - Rodney Goggins / John Sutton / Greg Casey
Scotland - Craig MacGillivray / Scott Donaldson / Michael Leslie
Wales - Duane Jones / Kristian Phelps / Kishan Hirani

Ladies
none listed so far

Masters
Ireland - Mark Tuite / Albert Hogan
Wales - Elfred Evans / Darren Morgan

Group qualifiers go through to Ko stage in both events.

Your intrepid EBSA Media Officer will be in Bulgaria covering the event.

How do the matches work - is it each player plays one frame against each player ? Or do they take turns at the table? (I assume this isn't played in 'alternate shot' format). 'Scuse my ignorance on this!

Sorry, just answering my own question on this - didn't realise this would be under information/tournament conditions - so each player plays 2 frames against each player on the other team - that's quite a few frames in the Mens competition ...

Hannah Jones and Gaye Jones (no relation) will be representing England in the Ladies Team Championships.

Recently had confirmation and just booked flights.

That's a rather improbable team… :chin:

That's great news Mark. Wish them luck!

Looks like they're filling out spare places with extra teams too - a second Russian team in the Ladies, 3 extra Bulgarian teams in the Men's (well, they are the hosts) - and a second Irish team in the Masters, Ernest McMullan and Stephen Merrigan. And there's now an Isle of Man team in the men's - Darryl Hill, Peter Kirkham & Dave Addinall

I see Alan Trigg (from Leeds, formerly coach to Paul Hunter and Kelly Fisher) is playing for the Ukraine Men's team, I think he's living out there at the moment.

(Is it true what he says on his website, that he's made a dozen 147 breaks in tournaments? Impressed with his play as well as his coaching if that's so).

Just noticed the Swiss team - or maybe we should say, Swiss-based team - consists of Switzerland's Pascal Camenzind, Spains Oscar Medela (who owns Medela Sports in Zofingen), plus England's Darren Paris (who works at Pot Belly's Snooker Club in Zurich, but plays for Medela's club, runner-up to Lee Richardson for the 1999 Austrian Open).

Do hope they have a re-think about tabling the matches, at present if the only streamed table remains table 8 NONE of the ladies group matches are due to be streamed.

Just had a quick look at which teams are on the live streaming table tomorrow. Some that may be of interest:

8 am our time Masters - Ireland 2 (Ernest McMullen/Stephen Merrigan) v Malta (Ivan Rizzo /Manwel Mallia)

10.30 am Masters Ireland 1 (Mark Tuite/Albert Hogan) v Iceland (Tryggvi Erlingsson/Brynjar Kristjánsson)

1pm Mens Bulgaria 1 (Georgi Velichkov/Bratislav Krustev/Salim Otti ) v Romania (Toma Marinescu/Paul Croitoru/Rares Sinca)

3.30 pm Masters Ireland 2 (Ernest McMullen/Stephen Merrigan) v Israel 1 (Tomer Neufeld/Yan Kunis)

The Irish team of Rodney Goggins, John Sutton and Greg Casey opened their account in Group B in the mens championship with a 3 - 0 win over Denmark (3-0,3-1,3-0).

A good start for the Welsh team of Duane Jones, Kisham Hirani and Kristian Phelps too, beating Bulgaria 1 3-0 although the matches were close (3-2,3-2,3-1).

The Scottish team of Michael Leslie, Scott Donaldson and Craig MacGillivray however lost 1-2 (3-0,1-3,0-3) to Israel 1 (David Vaizman, Roey Fernandez and Shachar Ruberg).

Sorry, at the moment I've no idea which player played which player in these ...

... but looking at the high breaks list, can see John Sutton had a break of 101 and Duane Jones a break of 103.

In the Ladies event so far in Group A England (Hannah Jones and Gaye Jones) have beaten Israel 2 - 0 (2-0,2-0) and split the points with Poland (0-2,2-0). A rest day today for Hannah and Gaye. Poland split their match against Belarus too, so England have an early lead with 3 points.

In the Masters in Group A the Belgian team of Rene Hemelsoet and Mario Van Herk) is undefeated, having won 3 matches 2-0 and then drawn 1-1 (3-1,0-3) with Ireland 1 (Mark Tuite and Albert Hogan) this morning. The Danish team (Allan Norvark and Rune Kampe) had also drawn 1-1 (3-1,1-3) with Ireland 1 and they and Ireland 1 are also still undefeated. Belgium plays Denmark tomorrow at 10.30 our time with one of the games on the live steaming table.

In Masters Group B the previously undefeated Ireland 2 team of Ernest McMullen and Stephen Merrigan lost this morning 2-0 (0-3,1-3) to Wales (Elfed Evans and Darren Morgan). Malta (Ivan Rizzo and Manwel Mallia) have beaten Bulgaria and France, making up ground from their opening match loss to Ireland 2.

In the Men's, England's team of Michael Wild, Robbie Williams and Steve Judd are undefeated in Group A, having beaten Bulgaria 3, Isle of Man and Switzerland, all 3 - 0. Poland 1's team of Krzysztof Wróbel, Marcin Nitschke and Jarosław Kowalski are also unbeaten, with 3 - 0 wins over Bulgaria 3 and Belarus. England and Poland 1 play tomorrow at 3.30 our time.

The Irish team of Rodney Goggins, John Sutton and Greg Casey lost their Group B match against Ukraine (Sergiy Isayenko, Vladyslav Vyshnevskyy and Alan Trigg) 2-1 (0-3,3-1,3-1), whilst Belgium (Yvan Van Velthoven, Alain Vandersteen and Pascal Raes) won their opening matches, 3-0 (3-0,3-2,3-1) against Ukraine and 2-1 (3-0,3-0,0-3) against the Poland 2 team of Michał Zieliński, Grzegorz Biernadski and Adam Stefanów.

In Group C of the Men's Team Championship the Welsh team of Duane Jones, Kishan Hirani and Kristian Phelps slipped up, losing 2-1 (3-0,3-2,2-3) against the French team (Ahmed Benraïssi, Rene Vaxelaire and Stephane Ochoiski), who also beat Israel 2 and with only 2 matches played by each team, France are the only team that is still undefeated. The winless Romanian team are up next for Wales, Cyprus are France's next opponent.

Scotland (Craig MacGillivray, Scott Donaldson and Michael Leslie) recovered from their opening match defeat by Israel 1 to beat Bulgaria 2 3-0 (3-0,3-1,3-1) in their next match. Israel 1's team of David Vaizman, Roey Fernandez and Shachar Ruberg beat Malta (Duncan Bezzina, Simon Zammit and Alex Borg) 3-0 (3-2,3-0,3-0). After 2 matches they are the only undefeated team. Scotland's match against Malta tomorrow at 3.30 our time could be crucial to their chances.

Thinking about it, I might be exaggerating as 4 teams go through from each group of six, but certainly helps with where they are seeded for the knock-out stages ...

Re: European Team Championship 2012

Postby roy142857

In the ladies event England (Hannah Jones and Gaye Jones) and Russia 1 (Irina Gorbataya and Svetlana Kharlova) are through to the knock out stages from Group A with only each other left to play. England must win to get straight into the semi-final, Russia 1 just needs a draw. Poland are likely to claim the other knock out spot and could finish ahead of England, as they will probably beat Israel, who have yet to win a frame. Even a draw would probably do for Poland, as long as they don't weaken their frame difference.

Germany and the young Russia 2 team are both well placed in Group B, although less matches have been played - both have only played 2 matches, but have won them. They are playing each other at the moment, current scores (best of 3):

Anne-Katrin Hirsch (Germany) 0 - 1 Anastasia Nechaeva (Russia)
Diana Stateczny (Germany) 0 - 2 Daria Sirotina (Russia)

The other team to have played 5 matches, Bulgaria, is out of it with no points, and the other teams are Israel One on 5 points, Malta on 4 points, France on 3 points and Russia on 2 points.

A buddy of mine, Mark Tuite, knocked in a 131 either this morning or last night I hear. He's playing well. Good luck to him too.

They are doing pretty well, the 131 was yesterday against Belgium, Mark won his match 3 - 0. They are undefeated but with 3 draws - they've won one match and lost the other in matches with Belgium, Switzerland and Denmark.

Will look at the Group results in a moment, but the last 16 matches are underway with Wales playing Poland 1 and one of the games, Kishan Hirani against Poland's Krzysztof Wróbel, is being shown on the live steaming - Wrobel leads 1-0 at the moment (matches are still best of 5). Well worth a look!

Jarosław Kowalski leads Duane Jones 1-0 and Kristian Phelps leads Marcin Nitschke 1-0 in the other games.
