If you could handpick your current top 20

Postby Snooker Overdrive

I'm not too pleased with our current ranking list so I want you to handpick your current top 20 considering recent form and player potential.

Mine would look like this:

5 Stephen Maguire
6 Mark Williams
7 John Higgins
8 Shaun Murphy
9 Mark Allen

13 Stuart Bingham
14 Matthew Stevens
15 Ali Carter
16 Ricky Walden
17 Martin Gould

he shouldnt even be in the top 32 if were picking lists based on form and potential

Ding collected only 1000 points more than Carter this season and everybody will have him in their top 20.

Dings skipped a lot of PTCs

Ding has been poor this season admittedly by his standards but hes only 24 and this is just a blip, hes won 3 majors and has many more good years in him.

Carters the one on a real downwards spoiral and the one talking about retirement so hes not worthy of a place near any top 20 of mine.

Got to go with what I'd like to see points wise, which is rankings based on full points for events over the past year, half points for events from the previous year - and sorry, this does keep Carter in the top 20 if my quick calculation is right, and you might hate the number 1, but my top 20 are as follows (sorry no account taken of potential, but I find that hard to quantify):

1. Mark Selby
2. Judd Trump
3. Mark Williams
4. Shaun Murphy
5. John Higgins
6. Neil Robertson
7. Mark Allen
8. Graham Dott
9. Stephen Maguire
10. Ding Junhui
11. Martin Gould
12. Ronnie O'Sullivan
13. Matthew Stevens
14. Stephen Lee
15. Stuart Bingham
16. Ricky Walden
17. Ali Carter
18. Mark Davis
19. Stephen Hendry
20. Andrew Higginson

Going back to the 'potential issue', well I'd probably be placing Li Yan, Yu Delu, Xaio Guodong, Michael Holt, Ben Woollaston and Sam Baird in there, and lets have the new IBSF Champion Hossein Vafaei Ayouri, and as a bit of a reach (and needing much more experience), Poland's Adam Stefanov.

But if a friend would ask you who the best snooker players in the world are, would you read him that list?

No way Robertson is anything below 2. or 3. and no way Gould is in front of Ronnie.

Yes! Well, actually the question's more likely to come from my son ...

You might be right on both counts re Robertson and Gould (I think you are), but it'd still just be my opinion, and if sport's just decided on opinion, then they might as well not play. Need a fair ranking system that you feel balances things correctly.

Of course, the opinion bit is fun

:-D

Yea, I think Ding has teh better chance in major tournaments, but he is just so inconsistent.

:spot on: Well put Sonny,It is so close out there that last weeks form that arrives by the Semi final of the tournamen tbeing played is out of date by the monday.

Another day a different winner,I know many will not agree,But Hearn has certainly spiced it up.

I am not gonna make a list of any of the players mentioned on this thread as they are all more than capable of doing the biz.

Best snooker i have watched in years is all i can say about Hearn's radical and practical approach.

Wow we are in for some snooker treats in the next few years.

I love my Snooker more now than i ever have,I am particularly keen to watch Ronnie and Alllen matches,And the rest of course'

I am even beginning to get how selby plays though he was a lucky bleeder in his match with Ronnie in the Welsh >-( Still he is a great tactician and im sure will win a world title soon,A nice guy at heart with a sense of humour.

I want Ronnie to get back to the top flight again,And he is showing signs that it could be possible.

Martin Gould will win something soon if he could just get his safety game up to scratch.

Have to say that my eagerness to watch top flight snooker is well back. :spot on: <cool>

TOTALLY AGREE

now is the best time ever to be a Snooker Fan.

Firstly Competition is Fierce nobody Dominating hence why the Dispute of Selby being the Rightful No 1 Keeps raging on but because nobody dominating that where Selbys Consistency comes in.

Secondly Tournaments every week almost ok not every one a World Championship or even in a Arena but its Snooker.

Thirdly Streaming..... over the years theres been calls for Streaming especially the intenced presure of reaching the crucible well Next Month that will be Streamed Live on the Internet.

whats gets me tho is that every single event that springs up in Europe or China EUROSPORT are all over it in a flash so of course they would get involved in a UK event.

joke Hearn hasnt persuaded the likes of ITV or Sky to get a proper UK based event tho?

what happens if the Beeb drop another event, is it lost forever or does it move to China too <doh>

Eurosport also cover all the UK events, although I don't know if they just take the BBC's feed. If the BBC drop another event maybe Eurosport might take it, although with less interviews and stuff.

Eurosport just transmits the feed the BCC provides us from the UK, they dont have their own cameras in those UK events, but if the BBC drops a tournament then europort might take it, although as you said with practically no interviews or the backstage of tournaments, etc... in china is the same, this time with feed from CCTV.. they only show the european ptc events and the german masters with their own cameras from eurosport... they dont have the rights to show the sky sports events though, the power snooker, shootout and premier league...

but still, eurosport, with or without their own feeds, is the channel that shows the most snooker all year, covering practically all events as I said above... the only thing that annoys me is when they drop their live coverage to show some highlights from other sport that isnt being shown live, or, worse still, is when they show most snooker from Monday to Friday, only to during the weekends show basically nothing of the semis or final, especially the finals... doesnt happen all the time, but when it does happen it annoys me very much..

I cant complain much though, Eurosport is what got me into snooker, so I should be grateful for that, and I am.
