LATEST PROVISIONAL END OF SEASON RANKINGS

Postby Witz78

following the German Masters, heres a peak ahead to what the rankings are provisionally projected to be come the end of the season. Minimum points awarded for the Welsh Open and PTC Finals. World Open, China Open and World Championships also to be played, so whilst theres plenty of points still up for grabs, this is a fairly indicative guide of the way things should be looking come May.

And most importantly the Carter haters will notice that hes going to be out of the elite, unless he gets the finger out.

ive a feeling you already knew that answer :john: nothing in it really between the top 3 tho.

ive highlighted a selected few

some big names could be set for a sudden drop

and as for Wild thinking Hendry will suddenly rise up the rankings next season, well sure he doesnt have a great deal to defend, but hes not gonna be starting from a great position as shown on my provisional end of season list, so the top 16s a fantasy of Wilds. (well i think Wilds fantasies have maybe changed in recent months  )

this is how the rankings are projected to look COME THE END of the season

this is the China and WC points from 2010 ommited now.

Its actually the same method that the old provisional list worked under before the rolling rankings.

in simplistic terms though, the points shown for each player are the total earned for LAST season plus THIS season to date, so whatever they earn in the last 5 rankers gets added on and thats where they end up, so things may change, but currently thats where there estimated to finish.

Carters a goner from the top 16 come May, ive been confident of that one all season and its looking odds on now.

I also predicted Allen might fall and bar his UK final run hed have been in dire touble.

Stevens didnt qualify for worlds in 2010 and china

maybe thats why nothing to defend from them

its not rocker science mate

hes Mr. Consistency plus he plays all the events

Since start of last season hes had big points from these -

won Shanghai
runner up in China and Germany
semi final in Shanghai and Wales
quarter final in Worlds, Australia and Germany

plus hes not lost a last 32 game either so hes picking up points consistently.

I'm just surprised that these two are so high up in the ranking. Can't remember them having such a good run for 2 seasons now.

Rankings is not about Winning Tournaments its about having sustained Consistency over a long period thats why Stuart Bingham a Ranking Event Winner this season is just about still in the Top 16 officially and on the One year list 15th and 8,500 points behind Neil Robertson at the top.

at the Weekend it demonstrated why Prize Money Rankings will not work or be Fair Ronnie O'Sullivan picked up just over £40,000 for his win in Germany. at the end of this month the World Open Champion will get £75,000 almost Double what Ronnie got and Next season theres a New Event in China with £125,000 first prize witch is 3 Times the German Masters and £25,000 more than the UK.

Rankings Should be concistancy Based not a Good Win here or there at the Right Events.

Re: LATEST PROVISIONAL END OF SEASON RANKINGS

True, but is it really any different to the present points system where the China, Shanghai and World Open are deemed 7,000 events compared to the 5,000 events in Wales, Germany and Australia. For me, if a points system stays, then there has to be more consistency. Also the UK and WC should have more points to reflect their importance better.
But personally im in favour of moving to a money based Order of Merit. In a busy calendar it will work far better. It will see the players able to pick and chose the events they prioritise and enter better. But the knock on effect and principle benefit of this system will be that sponsors will stump up more cash to boost the status of their event. Like it or hate it, money makes the world go round the players are out to make a living, so i envisage events competing against each other almost in a bid to ensure the big names are lured to play in their event by means of dangling a carrot of better prize money in front of them.

if you consistant wins tournaments and reaches finals then you will be no 1 but i dont believe that winning a tournament then shed loads of last 32s is acceptable to be WN 1 ahead of consistant quarter or semi finalists.

to be regarded as a great its how many events you win but rankings is seperate to that.

Very good assessment of the present status quo in snooker,Cant disagree with a word you have said here. :spot on:

Yes the money ranking is the way it should go.

Also i note no hint of militancy ,Just good common sense applied to logic.

Yo are a positive fan of snooker Witz,Good on you mate,Brilliant idea's from a clever mind.

Wild, An Order of Merit will see greater incentives for players to win events, the days of almost being happy to settle for a few wins at a venue will be over. The incentive will be the impact that a win would do to your ranking so you will see players all up for a tournament and giving their all to win. Winning a tournament should be a big thing and should be rewarded fairly instead of just leading to you moving a couple of places up the rankings. Take Ronnie, for beating Maguire in Germany. The ranking points he gets for winning that important match only equate to 59% of the points he would get for winning a last 32 game in the China Open. Thats wrong. Likewise getting knocked out in the last 16 of both, China and Shanghai earns you 320pts more than winning German, Welsh or Australian title. Farcial again. The PTC rankings have shown to work well and reward those who achieve, so an Order of Merit should come fully into effect on the main tour rankings now i say.

Sponsors cant put in more money if they havent got any.

at the moment snooker is in a possition of taking scraps they can get....it will take years to build it up to a possition of strength where sponsors will be engaging in a bidding war in the meantime get lucky in certain events you made for the season or two.

ive never heard you complaining about the PTC order of merit set up where you could win PTC1 then you just have to show face at 5 more events and lose 4-0 to guarantee your finals place.

Anyway, gotta speculate to accumulate. Trust me, what i propose id implented will work well and things will happen.

Take Wales for example, players might be tempted to skip it as poor money so the money will be found from somewhere to boost the fund and entice more big names to play.

order of merit is different but persanally id make that more fair aswell fluking one win could get you in a PTC Finals.

Points from the World Open qualifiers can be added in too. Walden has already qualified so is provisionally up to 11th. Mark Davis was the most notable non-qualifier so he's fallen behind Higginson now. Doherty lost ground in the battle for Top 32. Yu Delu moves into the Top 64, but Li Yan missed the event so presumably won't be awarded any ranking points.
