Hendry's career prize money?

Postby Bolton

The figure on Wikipedia seems to be 2 years out of date and says he is on £8.65 million or thereabouts. In April 2011 when it seemed he might retire most papers said he had won £8.8 million. 9 months on assume he is nearer £8.9 million just curious as to if or when he will pass £9 million. Pretty poor figure obviously compared to a Woods or Federer who have had career prize money 5-10 times this whereas at one point 20-30 years ago the winner of a big golf or tennis tournament got the same as the winner of a big snooker tournament. £150,000 to Robertson is not so much after yesterday at that level for what is a short career especially when he kisses good bye to say 60% of it in tax, tournament expenses and managers fees. I am open to correction but it seems at 29 to have taken him over the £1 million level for career earnings which again is not great- nothing against him just not a good reflection if where the sport is at notwithstanding Hearn

Snooker was left to fester stagnate and Going nowhere while other Sports Moved on.

Now you got Barry Hearn Snookered in trying to get it moving.

most Players do seem content with peanuts and complaign at everything that could get this sport moving forward with more money but in the future.

I wouldn't mind earning £9million in my career. Especially as that's not figuring in sponsorship deals, exhibiton matches etc...

He's earned something like £340,000 a year before expenses a year and for most of those years he prob made the same again if not more in exhibitions and endoresements. Because of the length of his career and the amount of money he earned he has prob but a fair amount of money in property years ago such that even allowing for any correction he is still ahead. Would have thought he was worth £10 million give or take. That said he seemed to let Stephen Hendry Limited be wound up by the tax man so not sure how badly he was hit by collapse of 110 sport and how liquid his wealth is. That said his notional average £680,000 a year earnings is before 60% or so in deductions for tax and management expenses and is about a months pay for a top tier footballer. But the original perhaps pedantic point is how near to or other £9 million is he in career earnings just from the table.

one thing to bear in mind is that Hendry, and prob even moreso Davis and Jimmy, earned the bulk of their fortunes 15/20/25/30 years ago when the prize money was worth far more.

I remember reading this a while back which showed how much the true worth of earnings from the players was.

Put it this way id rather have won £150k 20 years ago than today.

£211,000

http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/bill ... -1900.html

USE THAT LINK TO WORK OUT ANY PREVIOUS PRIZES TO SEE HOW PRIZE MONEY HAS DROPPED BADLY

take Jimmys Mita WIN in 1991, that 200k for a non ranker event is equivalent to £358k which is over 100k more than what the current World Champion earns so you can see how things have gone backwards

says it all that in the mid 80s Steve Davis was Britains highest earning sportsman even though youd big names in the world of sport such as Lineker, Faldo, Mansell, Bruno, McGuigan

imagine that now, a snooker player earning more than boxers, footballers and formula one drivers :chuckle:

a quick survey of the Crucible WC winners prize money adjusted for inflation shows this

the bold years being the years where the winner earned more than this years winner will

and the red year 2003 being when the winners prize peaked

as you can see the prize money grew at ridiculous levels per year through the 80s peak years

it then gradually rose during the 90s

but as tobacco sponsorship came to an end the money stangated and now seems to be stuck on the 250k mark, which in true terms becomes worth less and less each year.

According to Wikipedia the first prize for the Masters in 2003 was £210,000. That was the last year of B&H sponsorship and the same year the World Championship peaked at £270,000. Mark Williams won both. His UK title earlier in the season only got him £84,000. That tournament didn't have a tobacco sponsor.

that means Williams Masters win in 2003 was equivalent of £269,000 compared to the £150,000 Robbo walked away with last night

as for the UK, Ronnie won 100k in 2001 which is now equivalent of £142,000 compared to the prize which is still 100k
