Welsh Tour 2011/12

Postby roy142857

Event 2 of the Welsh Tour at Vetz Snooker Club near Bridgend was won by Kristian Phelps, defeating Rhydian Richards in the final.

With apologies, I don't know full details of the event as all I've seen is an update to ranking points, which show semi-finalists were event one winner Duane Jones and Alex Taubman, and quarter finalists were Pete Roscoe, Alun Squire, Jak Jones and Jamie Clarke. Notable players knocked out in the qualifying stages include Stephen Ellis, Kishan Hirani, Lee Walker and Gareth Allen.

6 events count towards the rankings, the four main events, the 'European' (at which the winner becomes the Welsh entry for the EBSA European Championships) and the Welsh Championships. Points for the main events are 280 for a win, 210 for runner-up, 150 for semi-finalists, 100 for quarter finalists, 60 for last 16, 30 for last 32 and 15 for last 64. My understanding is that the winner of this tour will be the Welsh nomination for a main tour place.

Standings (top ten):

Duane Jones 430
Rhydian Richards 420
Kristian Phelps 340
Stephen Ellis 180
Alex Taubman 180
Kishan Hirani 165
Lee Walker 160
Gareth Allen 160
Pete Roscoe 160
David John 130

The next event will be event 3, to be held at Pockets Snooker Club, Newport on 22nd January (qualifying rounds on 15th January).

That I'm not sure of. Seem to recall Colin had good runs in some tournaments from time to time but never cracked the top 32? He was a pro for most (all?) of the 80's and I think into the 90's. I think he was in the Seniors championship one year recently, don't think it was last year, and I may be confusing him with someone else (!)

Peter was Welsh team captain at one time, if they are related probably a generation older as he's 40 I think and Colin is probably in his 60s. Had a check on the Welsh Snooker site and they say he was Welsh No. 1 in 2002 and 2005.

Sorry Roland! Played with a dodgy set of balls and we both stuggled. As for the Roscoes, Pete is mo relation to Colin. Colin is related to Paul Roscoe who is a good player. Pete is from Llanberis and Colin is from Shotton.

Me and Pete are in the Quarter finals of event 4 in 2 week time.

Marcel Price was the surprise winner of Event 4 of the Welsh Tour at the Terry Griffiths Matchroom in Llanelli at the weekend.

:win:

The previous weekend had seen the top 3 in the rankings all fail to make the quarter finals, 3rd ranked Kristian Phelps going out at the last 32 stage and the top 2 Duane Jones and Rhydian Richards going out in the last 16. 9th ranked Alex Taubman was an early casualty, going out at the last 64 stage.

Results from quarter finals on:

Gareth Allen 3 - 1 John Bevan
Stephen Ellis 3 - 1 Kishan Hirani
Lee Walker 3 - 0 Jamie Clarke
Peter Roscoe 0 - 3 Marcel Price

Gareth Allen 3 - 1 Stephen Ellis
Lee Walker 1 - 3 Marcel Price

Gareth Allen 0 - 3 Marcel Price

High Break - Lee Walker - 109

Updated rankings:

1. Duane Jones 770
2. Rhydian Richards 630
3. Stephen Ellis 480
4. Kishan Hirani 475
5. Gareth Allen 470
6. Kristian Phelps 430
7. Lee Walker 370
8. Peter Roscoe 360
9. Marcel Price 340
10. Jamie Clarke 245
11. Alex Taubman 225
=12. John Bevan 220
=12. David John 220

Well done Gaz. Aiming for a trip to Latvia for the European Championship, that would be good!

Did you see Welsh Snooker has moved the date for the European Qualifier finals from 11th to 25th March?

Thanks mate. Ye I know, I can enter the SWSA tournaments now. Should be good match practice.

I have never played at this place in Bridgend, have you?

Well known for my inability to pot two balls in succession, so a most definite no re any snooker hall where someone might be watching!

Maybe you could ask one of the players who played there in December - Duane Jones, Alex Taubman, Kristian Phelps and Rhydian Richards (Kristian Phelps probably loves it cos he won!)

Gaz and Richard being the qualifiers from North Wales, they'll be joined by South Wales qualifiers Marcel Price, Stephen Ellis, Duane Jones, Edward Topham, David Donovan and Callum Lloyd.

Frustrating!

Any idea if he's changed his game in some way? Seems to have really stepped up of late ...

For the record, the results of the Welsh European qualifier are below. Quite a few notable players missed out in qualifying, including Kishan Hirani, Rhydian Richards, Jamie Clarke, Kristian Phelps and Dale Lawrence.

Marcel Price 3 - 0 Richard King
Duane Jones 3 - 1 David Donovan
Gareth Allen 3 - 2 Callum Lloyd
Stephen Ellis 3 - 1 Edward Topham

Marcel Price 3 - 1 Duane Jones
Gareth Allen 3 - 0 Stephen Ellis

Marcel Price 3 - 1 Gareth Allen

So Marcel Price joins rankings leader Duane Jones at the European Championship in June.

Rankings following the final tour event, just points from the Welsh Championship (quarter finals to be played 29th April) to add for the season rankings:

1. Duane Jones 920
2. Gareth Allen 680
3. Rhydian Richards 660
4. Stephen Ellis 630
5. Marcel Price 620
6. Kishan Hirani 505
7. Kristian Phelps 460
8. Lee Walker 370
9. Pete Roscoe 360
10. Alex Taubman 285

I believe 2nd, 3rd and 4th place are due to reverse once the results so far in the Welsh Championships are taken into account - Phelps would move up too with a quarter final win.
