Snooker Player of the Year 2011

Postby Snooker Overdrive

The year 2011 is coming to an end. It's time to crown the "Snooker Island Player of Year"!

After Neil Robertson's crushing win last year, I certainly expect a new winner this year. Here are the obvious nominees:

John Higgins - World Champion and Welsh Open Champion
Judd Trump - UK Champion, China Open Champion and World Championship runner-up
Ding Junhui - Masters Champion
Mark Selby - Shanghai Masters Champion and runner-up in Germany and China
Mark Williams - German Masters Champion and runner-up in Australia and Shanghai
Stuart Bingham - Australian Open Champion
Ronnie O'Sullivan - Premier League Champion
Shaun Murphy - PTC finals Champion

Additonal choices:

Mark Allen - amazing runner-up in the UK and semi finalist in the Masters
Marco Fu - Masters runner-up, quarter finalist in the UK and semi finalist in the German Masters
Ricky Walden - UK semi finalist
Neil Robertson - Player of the Year 2010 and semi finalist in the UK
Nigel Bond - Shoot-Out Champion
Martin Gould - Power Snooker Champion
Ben Woollaston - PTC 3 winner
Andrew Higginson - PTC 5 winner
Michael Holt - PTC 10 winner

Please explain your choice.

Now it's your turn to vote. Choose wisely :gramp: You each have 3 votes!

Judd will obviously win this but it'll be interesting who gets positions 2 and 3. John Higgins is World Champion after all and he started off the season like crazy, winning everything and then his dad died and he had to withdraw and then he won the World Championships. Selby is WN1, Robbo has played better than he ever has, Mark Allen had a great UK final which is fresh in the memory and you've got all the PTC winners to think of too.

Surely if you're voting for a player of the year then it's in the singular (unless you vote for Ronnie with the split personalities :chuckle:). I ain't got time for fence-sitters <doh>

Complain to Sonny, not me. Also it's more interesting to see more players receiving votes instead of just Judd getting all.

3 votes was useful, otherwise I'd be torn, but 3 is easy for me - Higgins for the World Championship and general tenaciousness in matches; Selby for consistency and being world number 1. Despite that, if Trump had had the form he'd had from China Open on for 12 months, he'd clean-up on my vote, but still a very good year.

Trump the clear winner for the most significant breakthrough since O'Sullivan winning the UK in '93.

Following him, you can't ignore Higgins for becoming world champ for a 4th time and retaining his Welsh crown in emotional circumstances.

As a third I'd go for Williams, it's puzzling how he didn't win three ranking events this calender year.

Selby could be in the mix but he's a disappointing #1 given a lacklustre record in big ranking events.
