IBSF World Championship 2011

Postby roy142857

Sourced form the IBSF website :

The IBSF have (in part) resolved the problem caused by the withdrawal of Bahrain as hosts for this years IBSF World Championship by asking the expected hosts of the Six Red World Championship in Bangalore, India on Nov 28th - Dec 3rd to instead host the mens championship. However, in addition to no Six Red World Championship this year, there will not be championships for Women or Masters either.

Invitation letters will be sent in early October to the various national Federations, for them to nominate players for this possible route on to the Pro Tour for the 2012/2013 season. Let's hope that the short notice won't affect the quality of the field ...

Group stage ran today and continues tomorrow and Wednesday.

16 groups so looks like 16 group winners will play the winners of matches between players ranked 17-48 after the group stage, those matches and last 16 matches played Thursday, quarter and semi finals will be Friday and the final is on Saturday.

I know the final's not changed but are the semi-finals shorter than best of 13 this year?

I don't know for certain, couldn't see anything in the publicity from IBSF that I've seen, should think they would be longer matches as only quarter and semi finals played that day, time will tell I guess!

A quick update before going Christmas shopping (!)

Richards won this 4-1 to take control of Group Q.

Young Ehsan Heydari Nezhad of Iran has won Group C with only 3 frames dropped (2 against Rodney Goggins) - looks like someone with real potential (he's 21). The other young Iranian talent Hossein Vafaei Ayouri (age 17) apparently was on for a 147 when he missed a straight yellow this morning, but looks the likely winner of group G.

Pankaj Advani of India wrapped up Group D with his fifth win this morning, only two frames dropped by him in the five matches.

British and Irish players results for the first half of the final day of group games:

Muhammad Asif (Pakistan) beat Michael Wild (England) 4-2
91-28, 26-70(61)-00-95(95), 65-45, 71-09, 118(111)-09

Rhydian Richards (Wales) beat Mohamed Khairy (Egypt) 4-1
139(117)-00, 51-67, 84-26, 88(51)-02, 82-09

Rodney Goggins (Ireland) beat Bikasem Dabob (Libya) 4-0
71-27, 73-00, 70-28, 113(58)-08

Mark Boyle (Scotland) beat Alok Kumar (India) 4-1
14-82(54), 100(52)-22, 69(65)-33, 47-07, 57-41

It appears Brendan O'Donoghue's match with Firas Kamil Shaba of Iraq wasn't completed (leastways, no result up, and that's the normal reason for no result), O'Donoghue now playing Andreas Ploner of Austria.

Most of the group winners are sorted, even with the late matches to go. In Group P, Hitesh Naran of South Africa and Kamal Chawla of India are both unbeaten going into their match this afternoon. And in Group M, Pakistan's Muhammed Asif needs to beat Australia's Vinnie Calabrese 4-1 to take the lead from Rais Khan Sen Zahi of Afghanistan (Asif's already dropped a frame). In Group Q, Rhydian Richards of Wales only needs two frames against India's Balaji Reddy to clinch, he's got one of them already.

Groups L and R are the only complex ones. In Group R, Hong Kong's 'Tan' Au Chi Wai clinches by beating Belgium's 'Pistol Pete' Bullen, if Pistol Pete wins, he needs Syria's Karam Fateima to lose to India's Neeraj Kumar, or for Fateima to only win 4-3 whilst he (Pistol Pete) wins 4-0 (I think ...). Brijesh Damani of India would take Group L if he beats Noppon Saengkham of Thailand. If he loses, Scotland's Craig MacGillvray can take it either by winning by two or more frames against Antonis Poullos (Cyprus) or by winning and Damani losing by two frames. Saengkham needs MacGillvray to lose and to beat Damani by 2 frames (well, I hope that's right!)

Group Winners so far:
A. Thepchaiya Un-Nooh (Thailand)
B. Martin O'Donnell (England)
C. Ehsan Heydari Nezhad (Iran)
D. Pankaj Advani (India)
E. Lee Walker (Wales)
F. Fung Kwok Wai (Hong Kong)
H. Mohamed Shehab (United Arab Emirates)
J. Krzysztof Wróbel (Poland)
K. Steve Mifsud (Australia)
N. Wael Talaat (Egypt)

(Good spread of countries there!)

Century breaks so far (quite a few added - highlighted in bold):
Saleh Mohammad (Afghanistan) 141
Noppon Saengkham (Thailand) 140
Lee Walker (Wales) 132
Ehsan Heydari Nezhad (Iran) 131

Last quarter final result, Kamal Chawla wins 6-5 so two Indian players in the Semi-Finals. Chawla plays Hossein Vafaei Ayouri, Pankaj Advani plays Lee Walker so an all-Indian final a possibility.

Hossein Vafaei Ayouri of Iran is just 17 years old. His highest tournament break is a 135. This is somewhat a breakthrough for him, he only won one of his group matches at the Asian Snooker Championship in the spring. He's also competed previously in the Asian Games.

Kamal Chawla is aged 32 and from Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh. He has a highest tournament break of 128. He is ranked number 5 in India. He was a quarter finalist in this years Asian Snooker Championship and a semi-finalist in the 2010 Asian Six Red Championship.

Pankaj Advani is aged 26, highest tournament break is 139. The Championship is in his home city of Bangalore. He is known for his high level of skill and consistency at both Billiards and Snooker. He was IBSF World Champion for snooker in 2003 and last years runner-up. He also won the 2010 Asian Games Gold medal for billiards and has been World Champion for billiards six times - 1 WPBSA title and 5 IBSF titles.

Former Pro Tour regular Lee Walker of Newbridge in Wales is 35. He made the Pro World Championship quarter finals way back in 1997. His highest tournament break is 143. Possibly his most notable victory is a 10-7 defeat of Stephen Lee at the Crucible in 2004.

must say i had Thepchaiya Un-Nooh as favorite from the Quarter Finals so for Lee Walker to beat him 6-2 cant see anyone stopping Lee from winning now.

Walker stands a good chance, but Advani is always tough - just a consistently good player. One all between them at the moment.

Something seems to have happened to Hossein Vafaei Ayouri since he missed out on a 147 clearance earlier in the week by missing a straight yellow - seems to have raised his game, he's raced to 3-0 ahead in his match, would fancy his inexperience would be a problem in a final but you never know!

I watched Leo Fernandez beat him at the World Champs in Syria in the Last 16in December 2010. He came into the match with good results but Leo bullied him on the table winning convincingly in the end.

Looks like he has kicked on.

Will be interesting to see how he handles Lee but I would presume that Lee's experience and attacking play will see him through to the title.

Sorry, don't know the semi scores as I was out during the rest of the live scoring, and no results yet on the IBSF website - but the live scoring screen is already set for a Walker v Ayouri final.
