Overall 1980s top 16 rankings

Postby Witz78

I have trawled through the ranking lists for the 80s awarding 16 points down to 1 point for the top 16 players each season and the overall rankings for the decade can now be released.

1- STEVE DAVIS 144 (Highest ranking 1st, 7 seasons -83/84 - 89/90)
2- CLIFF THORBURN 137 (Highest ranking 1st, 81/82)
3- TERRY GRIFFITHS 97 (Highest ranking 3rd, 81/82)
4- DENNIS TAYLOR 89 (Highest ranking 3rd- 86/87)
5- JIMMY WHITE 88 (Highest ranking 2nd, 2 seasons -87/88 - 88/89)
6- RAY REARDON 85 (Highest ranking 1st, 2 seasons -80/81 - 82/83)
7- ALEX HIGGINS 82 (Highest ranking 2nd, 82/83)
8- TONY KNOWLES 68 (Highest ranking 2nd, 84/85)
9- KIRK STEVENS 66 (Highest ranking 4th, 84/85)
10- EDDIE CHARLTON 62(Highest ranking 5th, 82/83)
11- WILLIE THORNE 53 (Highest ranking 4th, 83/84)
12- DOUG MOUNTJOY 46 (Highest ranking 5th, 81/82)
13- DAVID TAYLOR 38(Highest ranking 6th, 81/82)
14- BILL WERBERNUIK 35(Highest ranking 8th, 83/84)
15- JOE JOHNSON 34 (Highest ranking 5th, 87/88)
16- NEAL FOULDS 32 (Highest ranking 3rd, 2 seasons -87/88 - 88/89)

So as this shows Davis and Thorburn were clearly the 2 most consistent players of the decade.

What the list shows is that the 80s was a mix of the older senior players who had plyed their trade in the early days of the modern game, and the emergence of the younger generation of more professional players who would form the future of the way the game would go into the 1990s and beyond.

Is there any players your surprised to see so how or low on this list?

Or are there any your surprised to see havent made the 80s top 16 list?

Also notice the names Thorburn, Griffiths and Taylor above White which is what I was trying to get across to Littlesense in that topic about one time World Champions.

Re: Overall 1980s top 16 rankings

the top 3 was exactly how i thought it would be the only surprise at the top was Dennis that high especially above Jimmy although by 1 point.

John Parrott did not really come to his own until about 1988 so no surprise he wasent there

I honestly don't know what to make of that list. It's comparing things that are not comparable: people who where seasoned players during the 80th, with people like Jimmy who only turned pro in 1980 and even Neil Foulds who only turned pro in 1983...

It would be interesting to see how the 80's and 90's compare to the same idea but using the decades 75-85, 85-95, 95-05

yup it would when are you starting on working it out ;)

job for witz it might keep him quiet for a few months <laugh>

Monique,
The list wasnt done with any ulterior motive in mind, its simply a bit of fun and the only certain thing it proves is who the top 16 players for the decade as a whole were, based on rankings.
Wild,
Cheers for doing the 90s one for me! I can do the 00s one and would happily do 85-95 lists etc too.
I did do a inclusive list on 606 a year ago of the overall rankings from the late 70s to present, i will transfer it onto here.
Oh and wild, nothing will keep me quiet for a few months haha

Re: Overall 1980s top 16 rankings

i think monique is a little concerned that people will take them to seriously as you said if people will look at it as fun stats that demonstrates consistancy over a sustained period..

some are surprised to see Terry so high but ranking wise he was mr consistency a regular Quarter finalist during the 80s

of course players mature and deteriorate at regular intervals and just as Neal Foulds enters the top 16 David Taylor and Big Bill leaves.

Nice stats <ok>

Poor Alex stuck down in 7th, I suppose it highlights his inconsistency. Surprised to see Cliff second, he must have stuck around well.

yes i think your probably right there. come on witz

Sonny wrote:Williams above Hendry surely...

i thought that at first but then williams for the last couple of years was very low rank and even fell out of top 16 so not points, while hendry has been top 8 consistently.

very close one tho sonny

Re: Overall 1980s top 16 rankings

Postby Rocket_ron

just done a quick lookup and stephen hendry just pips mark williams into 3rd. not sure what points witz will award mjw for being 22nd?
so will leave it to witz to post the figues up

Re: Overall 1980s top 16 rankings

Postby Rocket_ron

Sonny wrote:Well if Hendry is above Williams for the 2000's then it's false.

i think it will be because mjw was up and down that will harm his score as hendry apart fom this season as been fairly well ranked consistenly.

sad, i know as MJW has won more in these years

Re: Overall 1980s top 16 rankings

Postby Rocket_ron

stats for 2000's

ronnie o'sullivan 15 ranking wins
john higgins 9 ranking wins
mark williams 9 ranking wins also

stephen hendry however 4

sonny, i see what you mean if hendry is above williams then its a robbery.

Re: Overall 1980s top 16 rankings

Rocket Ron – you’re missing the point. Ranking Points is not necessary based on title wins. It is a system which scores you on consistency. Hendry became World No 1 3-4 years back without winning a title but because he was constantly in semi’s and quarters.

Re: Overall 1980s top 16 rankings

Postby Witz78

1- O'SULLIVAN 148
2- HIGGINS 132
3- HENDRY 124
4- WILLIAMS 102
5= EBDON 90
5= DOHERTY 90
7- LEE 69
8- STEVENS 66
9- MAGUIRE 59 10- MURPHY 54
11- HUNTER 53
12- DOTT 48
13- MCMANUS 35
14- WHITE 30
15=SELBY 29
15=ROBERTSON 29
Sorry but at work so dont have time to write up the players highest positions too.
2 things to note. Hunter would have been around the top 6 had he lived and credit to Jimmy for being in the Overall top 16 for the 80s, 90s and 00s.
