Favourite Player and Why?

Postby Alex0paul

I am sure this has been done to death but I am interested in finding out why whoever it is is your favourite.

I think most know I am a huge Graeme Dott fan. A bizarre pick for a favourite you may think but he ticks all the boxes in what I like in terms of sportspeople. He is a fighter, never gives up and shows emotion. I first became a fan during the time he was shown in a field of cows with the sign "My name is Graeme Dott" and then he was involved in the live match of snooker I had seen. Alas he lost 13-2 to Higgins.

When he reached the world final and won the world title were two of the greatest sporting moments ever for me and I will never forget them. When you support a player like Hendry, O'Sullivan, Higgins etc you are used to this happening but when its a player you never thought would do it but has it feels special and you can appreciate it more.

Anyway enough about Dott, who are yours and why?

Sorry alex, I stopped reading after you mentioned Graeme Dott..... you're just winding us up aren't you?

You cannot be serious?

Ken Doherty for me <ok>

Started watching snooker in the mid 90s (1st world championship I watched was in 1995) and had sort of come accustomed to Hendry winning it every year <laugh>

Though I can vividly remember the 1997 world championship.. Ronnie's 147.. Alain Robidoux (remember him) making the semi final's.. the one thing i'll never forget is the final! Stephen Hendry vs Ken Doherty

Hendry had won 6 out of the last 7 world's and Ken was bidding to be the 1st overseas player to win the world championship since Thorburn in 1980.. as a wide eye young fan (12 at the time) I remember being parked up in front of the TV well past bed time for a school night and not being able to sleep for long after <laugh>

Hendry winning 5 frames in a row to get it back to 12-15.. after looking pretty out of it at 7-15... turned some head's.. but for me Ken's grit at the end, winning 3 hard fought frame after losing a close 1, is what kept me up long after the final.. edge of your seat stuff :)

Being a young lad this win had me buzzing in to the next season and continued to follow him to the final the following year.. and beyond that..

good thread idea, can't wait to read others favourites

I don't have "a favourite"... I either like or dislike a player, or occasionally just don't care either way...

from the top 16 -

O'Sullivan - like
Maguire - meh
Murphy - dislike
Higgins - like
Carter - dislike
Day - dislike
Selby - like
Fu - like
Robertson - like
Hendry - like
Allen - dislike
Perry - meh
Ding - meh
Ebdon - meh
Williams - dislike
King - meh

But even the ones I dislike, although I'll usually be supporting the other guy, I don't begrudge success to... with the exception of Murphy, who I really can't stand. But I think I'm not alone in that

Pretty much my take on the top 16.. except i'd give Ding, Carter and Williams a <ok> .. Used to have a bit more time for Maguire than i do at the moment.. but the players who tend to play a more aggressive game.. tend to get more time on my TV <laugh>

My all time favourite is Alex Higgins . You'd have to have been a youth in the 1980s too understand the hype - absolutely anything could happen on or off the table  Unfortunately he didn't win many titles so the 1982 world championship and 1983 UK championship were career highlights

Of the present crop Hendry remains my favourite since we're both from Edinburgh . I do remember the dark days when Scottish snooker was a joke . Hendry comes along followed by an avalance of other other Jocks . Can't say I'm keen on Dott or Mcguire due to playing style however

Can't say am all that keen on Ronnie either . Yeah he's fantastic to watch in full flow but he has to spoil it with constant excuses and whining when things don't go his way

Ken-Do was always one I liked, I especially remember his 2003 World Championship campaign. I have met him a couple of times, got his autograph etc, and the guy is a proper good bloke as well.

The first time I met him, I just ran into him wondering round The Crucible. It was like meeting somebody you've known for years, despite only ever seeing him on TV. I just went up to him and went; "Alright Ken?" and he said; "Alright." I said; "Can I have a photo?" he said no problem. When I took it, I was just like; "Cheers Ken!" and walked off.

This is a decent thread.

O'Sullivan - love his style of play, the panache, dislike his talk on the game/life/everything
Maguire - dont mind his game and do like to see some fire in the belly, I'd say I tolerate him
Murphy - dislike
Higgins - dislike (I have reasons) <ok>
Carter - like his play, and actually think he seems a nice bloke
Day - he frustrates me a lot, not disliked, real frustration to have that much talent and to not convert
Selby - like his game, dislike his "banter" which I find a bit cringeworthy to be honest
Fu - dislike his style
Robertson - dislike his cough and his fist pumping over excited moments (he is now a contender though I amdit that)
Hendry - dislike <laugh>
Allen - like his play and met him at Novotel Sheffield (a nice guy)
Perry - dislike due to eyebrow movements
Ding - like his style of play, dislike his demeanour (and had the cheek to walk out to Eye of the Tiger at Wembley) <laugh>
Ebdon - disgrace
Williams - like when on form (wish he would shave more often when on camera)
King - like (a real fighter and gives so much value in betting/predictions)

It has to be Doherty for me. Apart from being Irish, he's also one of only two players I've met. The other one was Jimmy White and of the two I liked Doherty better. White was alright but was a bit too eager to get to the bar.

Met Ken at the EISS last year. He stopped and was a very happy sort of chap (singing a song to himself). Got his autograph and he was very pleasant. <ok>
