So guys I wanted to know if anyone knew the year or years where more unseeded players won their first round match at the world championships than seeded players.
Obviously there is 16 matches. Have we had 9 or more unseeded players ever reach the second round at the same tournament in the same year ?

The 2012 champs saw eight through, so an even split.
Not sure if there were any 'better' than that.

Yes, since the World Championship has had a first round of 32 players, there have been 2 occasions when half the seeds have gone, 1992 and 2012.
Over the last 40 years, the average seed casualty in the first round is 4.4 seeds, so either 4 or 5. Between 3 and 6 would therefore be a not unexpected result, though 6 is far more common than three.
The anomalous years were:
1983 - 1
1985 - 2
1990 - 2
1992 - 8
1993 - 1
1996 - 2
2009 - 2
2012 - 8
1016 - 7
2021 - 2
The longest stretch of low casualty rate was 1993 - 1996 (1-3-3-2)
The longest stretch of high casualty rate was 2004-2008 (6-5-6-6-5)
This year will likely be at the low end of normal or might become another anomaly as 2 have already exited, but Judd looks good at the moment to stay in but Brecel is having trouble. It's going to be either 2, 3 or 4.

Just seen this. Crazy to think snooker was being played all the way back in 1016 with 7 undressed players in there too. I wonder if King Canute had a ranking then.

Oh yes indeed, naked snooker was Canute's favourite pastime, so I read in history class.

In 2004, the majority of the seeds in the bottom half of the draw (5/8) lost their First Round match, and among the seeds that won was Alan McManus who advanced to the Last 16 after Chris Small retired from their First Round match after the first session.
For all the seeds that were disappearing in that half of the draw, the Semi-Final from that half was between Hendry and O'Sullivan (at seeds 2 and 3), the highest two seeds from that half of the draw.

Eight seeds losing their First Round is a record for the World Championship since it adopted a format of 16 seeds qualifying for the Crucible automatically. - As well as the 32 player draws listed already, 1980 (a 24 player event with the Top 8 seeds entering in the Last 16) saw 8 of the 16 seeds lose their opening match of the event. Strangely enough 5 of the top 8 seeds which entered in the Last 16 lost their first match, three of whom did so against qualifiers.
