Thing with Limerick is all the crime is on the outskirts of the city. Easily avoided. City centre is fine. You can't walk down O'Connell Street in Dublin without some runt waving a used needle at you.
Ha, i'm drinking in the north inner city the last 20 odd years. From O Connel St to Talbot St, Amien St, Parnell St and Ballybough. I love that part of town. I actially know quite a few of the lads murdered in this feud. It has destroyed the area. People living in fear because they have one particular surname. I've never had one problem in my life and some of the pubs i frequent would be a little rough around the edges. I love Dublin city. And esp the north inner city.
Sounds like fertile grounds for a documentary. Where's Ross Kemp when you need him?
He's been to Belfast and Derry.

Well, they're just not as closely related. Similarly, I could hold a conversation with an Estonian (barely), not with a Sami person.

It's a daily gring of violence, torture, kidnapping, corruption with lots of it done on camera to strike fear into their rivals/police/government. Nothing is as it seems. If your stopped at a police check point there's a good chance you'll be six foot under in no time. Dante's Inferno. Highway to hell. With no end in sight. 3 Italians just gone missing last few days. Stopped by police and handed over to the Cartel Jalisco Nueve Generation ; CJNG. Mexicos most piwerful cartel since El Chapos arrest and the split of tve Sinaloa Cartel. A very evil country at present.

You're absolutely right.
Some of the stuff you hear about is truly chilling. Just the other day I was reading about how the Zetas cartel, regarded as Mexico's most brutal cartel, swept into a medium sized town and basically destroyed it, killing everyone. All because they suspected one of the town's citizens of snitching on them. There's just no law and order in many parts of Mexico.
What I don't understand is why these cartels aren't just simply designated as terrorists. If they were maybe the Americans could send in their drones to target them like they do in the Middle East, Afghanistan etc because what they are doing now is not working.

Your braver than me Dan. I suppose me following all that for years wouldn't give me the best impression of the place. Its a country of 120 million. I feel sorry for all the good Mexicans. Good luck over there Dan. I'm sure you'll be fine.

Yea i tead that story years back. The FBI or DEA gave the game away with their Mexican informant and the town where he was from was basically wiped out in hours. They dont know te exact amount of deaths as whos there to record these things bit there has been a few witness accounts and carloads and SUVS of Miguel Trevino aka Z7 i think swept throufh and killed and tortured hundreds. Many never seen again. All because of a thick in the FBI. These cats dont play. They will kill you, your mother, daughter, friends, your cat and your goldfish. In the worst of ways imaginable. And ways you cant imagine in your worst nightmare Los Zeras were trained Mexivan marines who got specialist training from the Yanks also. They desertes to work for the Gulf cartel but after few years they solit into their own cartel and are blamed with bei g tve first to torture and kill on video. Sick.

Don't worry. We only ever hear the bad about these places. For some reason South America more than others. Remember all the fears about the Rio Olympics and World Cup? Turned out to be largely fine, except for a few US athletes and their shenanigans!
I went to Argentina a couple of years ago and likewise never saw a sniff of trouble.
Granted Mexico is worse than those places but I have a friend there and guess what? She lives a normal life.
I'd much rather go to Mexico than Russia, for example.
It's the same media hysteria that brings a new medical "epidemic" every year. Sars, bird flu, swine flu, zika virus. All blown out of proportion to cause panic and garner viewers and clicks.
Enjoy your festival!

They wont be released. Like the two Seido Mexican Police who were captured couple of weeks back and were seen in camera being forced into a confession ( check it out ) these two cats ended up in 100 pieces in tve trunk of a car. Initially the authorities thought it was three bodies because so many body parts. I'd be surprised if the same fate doesnt/ hasn't happened to these Italians. (Although rumours these were Italian mob men who tried rip off the cartel).

I know a Mexican couple here in Dublin who left the country because of the horror thats ongoing. No way is it hyped up by the media. If anything its down played. Over 20,000 official murders last year. They say ocer 250,000 in last 10-15 years. I doubt that very much. Mexican government corrupt as buck and want to keep the figures as low as possible so as not to buck up their tourist industry. I'd say the figure is closer to 1 million murdered. Holiday in Mexico at your peril. Hope you dont end up like the two Aussie surfers a few years ago.

Chalky: too lazy to delete all the extraneous quotes but just wanted to say that I know there are lots of terrible things that go on in Mexico and that there is lots of corruption and subterfuge and organised crime.
But for reference, there were around 650 murders in the UK in 2016-2017. In the US during the same period, there were over 17,000. That's over 25 times the murder rate for a population 5 times larger. That's an insanely large difference, but no one would ever say not to travel to the US (at least not for that reason...) you just need to know where to avoid.
You research the country, find out where is safe to be, and don't deviate from it. If you do that, 99% you'll be right as rain.

The American consulate gave out their annual travel warnings for the World recently and quite blankly said absolutely no travel allowed under any circumstances for 5 Mexican states and had severe warnings for many more. This aint no game. Mexican is one dangerous place for everybody. Nobody is safe. Two men of the cloth, priests executed over a month back. Thats over 40 priests murdered by the cartels. For nothing nore than speaking out agai st crime and the cartels. Worst place in tve world for journalists to work. If youd feel safe over there fare enough but it's a place id rather avoid and read about from a distance. From behind my sofa with my Sombrero on and eating nachos.
