It was the first year.

Do we start talking about the China Open Winner/Crucible curse thing yet? Or not until the final if Selby gets there?

Selby can't break the crucible curse but he would be the fourth person to defend this title if he goes on to win it.

Sorry, should have made it clearer.....the curse in the sense that the winner of the China Open (when directly before the World Champs) has gone on to win the World Championship.....that is still correct isn't it?

It's way too specific a statistic to be interesting.

Reminds me of Alan Partridge explaining Tennis scoring :
“Sport, on the other hand, is straightforward. In badminton, if you win a rally, you get one point. In volleyball, if you win a rally, you get one point. In tennis, if you win a rally, you get 15 points for the first or second rallies you’ve won in that game, or 10 for the third, with an indeterminate amount assigned to the fourth rally other than the knowledge that the game is won, providing one player is two 10-point (or 15-point) segments clear of his opponent. It’s clear and simple.”

Opponents should try to force Mark Selby to split the reds aka make him to work with the break-building. Then there´s an every chance to get better of him. But realistically thats the only way to receive even a respectable scoreline against him. Or to punch him. He hasnt even been tested for ages now. Mark Williams is the last one who even made him to play (China Open Final 8-10). If there´s a 50 on the table with an open reds, Mark Selby will do the 50. And so on.
So players should consider playing an unorthodox safety-shots against him. Trying to keep the reds tight. If Marks opens up those with safety-shots, make them back together.
I remember posting this first time a few years ago. And then after that a few times more. And yet still it is highly topical. Perhaps there´s just no room to play like that. Or then the best just keeps on winning. That´s the way it is with ALMOST any sport.

Selby's 143 was better than Ronnie's 146. Hendry's comments say it all.
