A long, long season upcoming.
I feel Matthew Stevens is a one player who will again quickly climb the rankings. To be back there where he actually belongs. He is again very surely polishing off the players who are not 100% confident about their own games. Matthew already qualified to the Indian Open, and now he is here also. He is not too old to be at this best by any means.

Thanks, Wild. That's pretty helpful. :hatoff:

Pity about the Paul Hunter Classic, I enjoyed my weekend watching that last year.

It's easy to forget how good a player Matthew Stevens actually was.

UK Champion
Masters Champion
Two Crucible finals

Like Jimmy though, he's most remembered for The Crucible finals because lost. (Though to be fair, his ability to bottle leads didn't help.)

I don't see any reason to suggest he might go through a purple patch at this stage of his career. But then, I guess, if Mavis, Hawkins and Bingham can have late career resurgences, why not Matthew?

This. Stevens was a terrific player.

It was only 2012 when Matthew was in the Semis of the Worlds, and in fairness, he was unlucky to have come up against Ronnie O'Sullivan who was in the beginning of his career resurgence (and Stevens played really well in the match!). I would have fancied Stevens against Ali Carter in the final.

How he lost that final to Murphy I will never know. Shaun was absolutely awful on the first day and really there for the taking (similarly to Matthew's World final against MJW, who was also awful on the first day! Both him and Murphy came out gunning on the second day, and Stevens choked his lead both times.)

Hu, Fu, Barney Mcgrew, Cuthbert, Dibble and Grubb?

Were Cuthbert and Dibble two characters, or was there one guy whose full name was Cuthbert Dibble?

No... it was "Pugh, Pugh, Barney McGrew, Cuthbert, Dibble, Grub."

Pugh and Pugh were twins. Brilliant!

We gonna see a bunch of kids, a few teachers and a dinner lady sat in the crowd?

What - triple the usual audience?

Yeah, that's a point.

With the ticket prices that they charge in China, ordinary people like teachers can never afford to go.

Is this actually true? Would it not be better to have a full house paying next to nothing? I do wonder about this quite a bit. Certainly for the PR aspect when watching on Eurosport.

It's what the commentators tell us in the UK.

Whenever there is an empty house, the explanation given is that a lot of fans can't afford to go as the ticket prices cost what the average worker makes in a week. So you get a few people who are loaded turn up to the venue, then millions watching it on TV.

Oh I agree that there wasn't an alternative and I'm sure he's taking the pragmatic view but it does make him look a bit of a lemon having trumpeted this contract only 3 months ago at the press conference where the Eurosport bods were making such a big deal about how important snooker was to them. So important it seems you don't show half of the final on your live channel.

I'm not generally anti-Hearn. I agree or at least accept most of his changes (save for the shootout being a ranker and the plethora of best of 7's, I guess my comment came from the disappointment that despite the growth of the sport in recent years, that the sport isn't in as strong a bargaining position with broadcasters yet as we'd all like.

But as you say, this is the best option at the moment and a lot better than our non Europe snooker watchers have.

Is there such a thing as British Eurosport player? I thought the ES player was the same for all.
