Jack Lisowski victim of the WST ranking system

Postby gninnur karona

Jack Lisowski misses out on seeding for the World Championship despite being 16th in the rankings if only taking prize money awarded for winning snooker matches into account.

Unfortunately for Jack Lisowski his accumulated ranking points for losing snooker matches total only 15000, which is 10000 less than Robert Milkins has gathered. A decisive difference allowing Robert Milkins to turn a 3500 deficit into a 6500 advance, and a place at the Crucible.

240000 ranking points in each of the last two seasons have been handed out for losing snooker matches, 80000 at each of the three one-season events. This season the damage risks to be greater - the end total will be 240000 + 30000 for each and every player entering the Tour Championship at the quarter-final stage who loses their opening match.

Whilst it is perfectly normal to pay players prize money according to their competition exit round regardless of whether they've had to win matches to reach that stage or not, to award ranking points to losers distorts the rankings.

WST should revert to the system used during seasons 2019-20 and 2020-21 when no opening round loser was awarded ranking points.

I think its a difficult one, as players qualify for those events by winning matches and so therefore it seems on balance fair enough.
I think a bigger issue is that with the number of tournaments we now have a 2 year ranking system is outdated - should be one-year with say top 80 keeping their cards and a bigger q school.
