European Championships 2025

Postby SteveJJ

The winner of the U18's and main event will get a tour card.

U16 final sees Michal Szubarczyk play Kryzstof Czapnik in an all Polish, all 14 yr old affair.

U18's started today. Our very own Andre is reffing as we speak.

5 tables being streamed

For the last four European Championships the winners of the main event and the U21 competition have been awarded tour cards. Haven't seen that confirmed as remaining the same for this season.

WPBSA have announced that the winners of the U21 and U18 events will be rewarded with places in the 2025 World Championship 1st qualifying round.

My apologies for the confusion! I meant U21's and Main. I'm assuming they get cards as previous years.

The U18 winner gets entry to the World Championship Qualifiers alongside the U21 winner (but again not the main winner).

Szubarczyk wins the U16's. Made a 124 earlier in the event. Will be interesting to see his progress. He's won his first 2 group games in the U18's, 3-0.

Under 21 field down to the last 16 featuring seven British players and nine players from Eastern Europe. Iulian Boiko and Anton Kazakov the two ex-pros whilst Michał Szubarczyk continues his quest for an unprecedented treble.

Last 16
Filips Kalnins v Michal Szubarczyk
Oliver Sykes v Sion Stuart
Anton Kazakov v Aidan Murphy
Sebastian Milewski v Krzysztof Czapnik
Oliver Briffett-Payne v Joel Connolly
Vladislav Gradinari v Westley Cooper
Iulian Boiko v Arsenii Korolev
Mykhailo Larkov v Kaylan Patel

the only two ex pros are from ukraine

there is nobody in the draw that are the definite winner

some say Michal Szubarczyk would be too young at 14 to turn pro but for me thats a decision only he and his parents can make

Re: European Championships 2025

The rather excellent runs of the two Polish 14 year olds came to an end in the Last 16

So Quarter finals are:

Filips Kalnins (Latvia) v Oliver Sykes (England)

Anton Kazakov (Ukraine) v Sebastian Milewski (Poland)

Joel Connolly (Northern Ireland) v Vladislav Gradinari (Moldova)

Iulian Boiko (Ukraine) v Mykhailo Larkov (Ukraine)

Join the youtube hordes watching the Ukrainian derby with Iulian Boiko trailing Mykhailo Larkov one frame to nothing. Iulian Boiko first in second frame with reds spread, breaks down on seven. Mykhailo Larkov loses full control of the cue ball but a forced red into left middle followed by the blue allows him to play safe 15 points ahead. Iulian Boiko reply proved not as safe as it looked. Mykhailo Larkov takes a half-chance. A 57 point contribution and Mykhailo Larkov is two frames to the good.

Iulian Boiko long way off with that red. Mykhailo Larkov cannot take advantage. Iulian Boiko sinks a long red. Looking good until missing an elementary blue on 19. Nothing on for Mykhailo Larkov who soon after is snookered behind brown. Three-cushion escape successfully performed at third time of asking. No snooker this time but Mykhailo Larkov misses all the reds and strikes black instead. Contacts red this time but the cue ball collides with the black once again and Iulian Boiko is in. Frame ball is followed by pink but the break ends there allowing Mykhailo Larkov to return to the table trailing 76-0, five reds left, black the wrong end of the table. Red black and red is all Mykhailo Larkov can pot. Iulian Boiko has a frame on the board.

Re: European Championships 2025

Iulian Boiko breaks off again following an early re-rack. Leaves Mykhailo Larkov a long red but that's not close. Iulian Boiko in but loses position from first black. At the table again. Unconvincing black follows the initial red. Frame-winning opportunity. Lands awkwardly on frame-ball colour. Brown proves too challenging. Mykhailo Larkov needs everything to force a re-spot. Red for starters but has to settle for blue. Second colour is pink. Botched safety 46 behind but Iulian Boiko fails to find the pocket. Easier chance and that doesn't go in either. Mykhailo Larkov sets the first snooker. No problem for Iulian Boiko. Escapes from the second too. Mykhailo Larkov double kiss. Iulian Boiko cross-double then glues white behind yellow. Two frames all.

Re: European Championships 2025

Postby gninnur karona

Nothing dropping. Radar needs fine tuning. Mykhailo Larkov presents Iulian Boiko the first gilt-edged chance. Iulian Boiko takes the red but lands perilously close to the black. Proves unable to pot it. In again this time returns the black to its spot at the earliest opportunity but doesn't land on a second colour. Place white tight behind the yellow. Mykhailo Larkov escapes but leaves Iulian Boiko a red via a cannon with blue. Loses cue ball, forced to play safe. 15-0 the lead ten reds left. Iulian Boiko has another opportunity. Extends his lead to 60 with the last three reds supposedly safe. Iulian Boiko wins the safety exchange and that one long red is enough for Mykhailo Larkov to concede. Iulian Boiko one frame away from a place in the semi-finals.

Re: European Championships 2025

Postby gninnur karona

Mykhailo Larkov first chance. Into the cluster from the black, leading 16-0. They've split nicely. 48 in front loses the cue ball. Good recovery black except that white has fallen into middle left. How many can Iulian Boiko make? Deficit wiped out. Ten in front but hasn't established final red so plays safe. Mykhailo Larkov leaves a tempter. Iulian Boiko isn't tempted. Mykhailo Larkov needs four attempts to escape the snooker. Leaves the red. Iulian Boiko pots red and blue to leave Mikhailo Larkov requiring snookers. Clears to blue and that's it. 4-2.

Well a bit of uncertainty re main tour card given lack of anything from World Snooker on it that we'd seen. But I noticed this from EBSA:

"As the U21 European Championship continues here in Turkiye one of the jewels from the EBSA Vault has emerged here in Antalya and it’s the dream of every U21 player to lift the Peter Ebdon Cup on Monday afternoon and be crowned European U21 Champion and receive a nomination to the Main Tour."

Once again late to connect to youtube. Joel Connolly and Iulian Boiko are locked together 1-1, a full complement of balls on the table. Joel Connolly loses the initiative with a loose safety allowing Iulian Boiko first chance to strike. Unable to do any damage from that or a second opportunity but an aggressive stroke from Joel Connolly proves rash. Iulian Boiko in. Handily pink finds a new home on the black spot. Runs out of position on 36. Recovery red but doesn't land on a colour. Nudges the white into the blue leaving Joel Connolly seeing just the one safe red which unfortunately for him he comes close to fluking. Iulian Boiko adds another five points then opts to manage his lead. Joel Connolly pots a red but sends the white on a long run into the yellow pocket. Iulian Boiko 56 to the good, four reds left, black teasing a cushion. Iulian Boiko pots all four reds. He leads 2-1.

Re: European Championships 2025

Postby gninnur karona

Joel Connolly goes for a dangerous red into left middle. Not accurate enough. Iulian Boiko opportunity. Cue ball not entirely under control. 35 in front. Forced to take a red into the far corner and it's some way off. No matter. Left middle lets down Joel Connolly again. Iulian Boiko can mop these up. Frame ball black is in but there's no clinching red to follow. Joel Connolly offers a further invitation. Iulian Boiko clears the table. 125-0 and a 3-1 lead.

Re: European Championships 2025

Postby gninnur karona

Both players take a short break. Meanwhile Oliver Sykes has whitewashed Anton Kazakov on the other table. Another Joel Connolly long-distance shot goes awry. Iulian Boiko, quickly down, pots a tricky red to right middle. Four reds four blacks but there are three reds in the wrong half of the table. They're all gone now. Frame ball red takes the break to 68. Unable to develop the last red. Has to settle for a 96 break and a place in the final.

Don't begrudge Boiko as he's clearly one of the best amateurs and has got close to requalifying a number of times but heartbreaking for Sykes

Re: European Championships 2025

As the knockouts are about to start, a thought. Has anyone any idea what happens if one of the three recent Q Tour qualifiers win the European Championship? All in good form and probably a lot more relaxed than other main contenders. Even without winning, could impact the result. And if they win, does EBSA get to nominate someone else? But how would they decide? Hope someone knows the answer!

Not questioning their right to compete, they aren't on the pro tour yet. But I don't suppose Steadman will be very pleased (for instance) if he finds himself in the last 16 up against a highly relaxed Liam Highfield and would surely be thrilled to win and then face Florian Nussle who might have (say) beaten Ashley Hugill ...

Re: European Championships 2025

Postby roy142857

Biggest surprise so far I suspect - Vasilije Pesic of Serbia beat Stephen Hallworth 4-3 in the Last 64. Given the form they'd shown to this point, a little less surprising Richard Wienold of Germany beat Ukraine's Anton Kazakov - the 4-0 scoreline more surprising.

So far Liam Highfield's had four century breaks including a tournament leading 142. The other player so far with four is Harvey Chandler.

Last 16

Liam Highfield (England) 4 - 0 Craig Steadman (England)
Ashley Hugill (England) 4 - 2 Aaron Busuttil (Malta)

Dylan Emery (Wales) 4 - 0 Vladislav Gradinari (Moldova)

Jovan Todorovic (Serbia) 4 - 3 Simon Lichtenberg (Germany)
Harvey Chandler (England) 4 - 1 Ryan Davies (England)

Nicolas Mortreux (France) 4 - 3 Kayden Brierley (England)
Michał Szubarczyk (Poland) 4 - 1 Chris Peplow (Malta)

Quarter finals just commencing

Join around 350 others watching Mateusz Baranowski versus Dylan Emery on youtube. Dylan Emery 11 in front, just the colours remaining frame one. Dylan Emery presents Mateusz Baranowski with a straightforward yellow but no way to promote the green. Mateusz Baranowski returns the favour and Dylan Emery duly sinks the green but the white travels a little too far flirting with the green pocket. Frame-winning opportunity gone. Next chance falls to Dylan Emery. Long brown tick. Long blue no. Mateusz Baranowski needs all three to force a respot. He'd have wanted a better safety than that but the angle leads Dylan Emery to turn down the pot. Better chance but sets up the blue for Mateusz Baranowski. Misses! Dylan Emery doesn't. That should be 1-0 but Mateusz Baranowski is back at the table for one last hurrah. That's not a snooker. Mateusz Baranowski concedes and that is 1-0.

Time to check out young Polish superstar Michal Szubarczyk, who leads Nicolas Mortreux 2-0 on table 1.

First blood to Nicolas Mortreux and he's followed up by gluing white behind yellow. Terrific escape by Michal Szubarczyk. Safety error Nicolas Mortreux caught red thin white dropping in right middle. Michal Szubarczyk settles for one point and initiating a meeting between white and brown. Nicolas Mortreux escapes but leaves a red. Michal Szubarczyk fails to take advantage despite coming close to fluking a further red. Nicolas Mortreux needs more than those three points. Michal Szubarczyk peruses an inviting table. Black wipes its feet and is relocated to the blue spot. That's perfect for Michal Szubarczyk. 45 break before leaving white uncomfortably tight on a cushion. Wise head? Turns down the pot. Michal Szubarczyk will be disappointed with that safety. Nicolas Mortreux duly sinks the red but a challenging pink to left middle stays out. Michal Szubarczyk possible frame ball again opts to manage his lead. Brown blue and black lined up and Nicolas Mortreux place the white behind them. Michal Szubarczyk escapes but leaves a chance. What can Nicolas Morteux do? Reduces the arrears to 31 but then the last red stays out. Michal Szubarczyk ensures red and pink no thoughts of the colours plays safe. First error Nicolas Mortreux. Michal Szybarczyk clears to pink and both players leave the referee to set up frame four. Long way back for Nicolas Mortreux.

Re: European Championships 2025

Postby gninnur karona

Nicolas Morteux first to pot a red. Michal Szubarczyk equalises. Michal Szubarczyk superb floated long red. Black follows. Opportunity to seal the deal. Break onto 37. Plant the only option. No problem. 44 in front leaving nothing to chance sends white to make acquaintances with yellow. That's another four points in the bag and Nicolas Morteux is asked to go again. Second attempt avoids another penalty but presents Michal Szubarczyk with an opening. Disappointed with losing position so quickly. Lead is 56 59 on the table. Tale of three attempts. Nicolas Mortreux then Michal Szubarczyk unable to pot red into middle. Nicolas Mortreux succeeds. What has he left in the tank? 23 before the last red stays out. Michal Szubarczyk says thank-you. A little careless though to not follow up with a colour. Nicolas Mortreux needs two snookers for starters. Pots yellow and there's snooker number one. No problem but there's mileage in this frame yet. Michal Szubarczyk escapes snooker numbers two, three and four but not number five. Nicolas Mortreux downs the green. Leaves a slither of brown. Michal Szubarczyk attempts an outrageous double but white and brown collide and white is in the pocket. Nicolas Mortreux removes brown blue and pink and everything is on the black. Nicolas Mortreux sends black into jaws of two pockets before it hurtles into the white which disastrously hurries into right middle. Dramatic end to the match. Michal Szubarczyk marches on to a semi-final with Harvey Chandler.
